Ulkopoliittisen instituutin hallitus on kokouksessaan 19. elokuuta valinnut UPIn uudeksi johtajaksi Tampereen yliopiston professori Hiski Haukkalan.

Valtiotieteiden tohtori Hiski Haukkala on kansainvälisen politiikan professori Tampereen yliopistossa. Hän toimi tasavallan presidentin kansliapäällikkönä vuosina 2018 ja 2021–2024.

In its meeting on 19 August, the Board of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs has unanimously appointed Professor Hiski Haukkala as the new Director of FIIA.

Doctor of Social Sciences Hiski Haukkala is a Professor in international politics at Tampere University. He acted as Secretary General and Chief of Staff of Cabinet at the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland in 2018 and 2021-2024.

The new FIIA Briefing Paper, written by Doctoral Researcher Junhua Zhu from Turun yliopisto - University of Turku, delves into China’s state-guided yet enterprise-led approach to AI standardisation.

As part of the great power competition many countries have entered an international AI race which encompasses not only technical expertise but also standard-setting power. 🔍

This paper challenges the common assumption, particularly in the EU, that standardisation in China is rigidly top-down. The AI standardisation processes in China are in fact highly reliant on enterprises. The author argues that a nuanced understanding of China’s approach to AI standardisation is important for European policymakers to make well-informed AI policies and to maintain European competitiveness.

China’s nuclear build-up will make it a nuclear peer adversary of the United States in the 2030s.

Uusi EU-komissio joutuu vastaamaan taloudellisen turvallisuuden haasteisiin kriisien keskellä. Mitä kaikkea se vaatii? Syksyn ensimmäisessä -lähetyksessä keskustellaan EU:n huoltovarmuudesta ja taloudellisesta turvallisuudesta.

Tiistaina 20.8. klo 11-12 studiossa ovat ovat keskustelemassa UPIn tutkimusjohtaja Mikael Wigell, tutkija Joel Linnainmäki ja Huoltovarmuuskeskus suunnittelu- ja analyysiosaston johtaja Axel Hagelstam. Keskustelun moderoi UPIn Anni Lindgren.

FIIA is a partner in the EU funded project "REWEU - Reuniting East and West: Reflections on the 2004 EU Enlargement". 🇪🇺

The REWEU project aims to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 2004 “big bang” EU enlargement, collect historical narratives surrounding the event and assess its impact on countries acceding to the bloc, some of the older EU Member States and the Union.

Washington D.C.:ssä järjestetty Naton huippukokous tuli päätökseensä. UPIn vanhempi tutkija Iro Särkkä summaa kokouksen antia. ⬇️

Särkän mukaan myös Suomi onnistui tavoitteidensa esiintuomisessa erinomaisesti. Esimerkkinä siitä ovat päätöslauselman kirjaukset Nato-joukkojen läsnäolosta. 🇫🇮
