Vaatimaton siivous- ja asiakaspalvelutiimiläisemme Veronika kuvailee kesäkautta näin:

"Kesä aina luo haasteita minulle, henkilönä ja siivoojana. En kestä kuumuutta kovin hyvin. Lisäksi Säynätsalon kunnantalo ja sen majoitustilat herättävät yhä enemmän kiinnostusta, joten töitä on myös yhä enemmän. Onneksi meidän henkilökuntamme on mahtava, Tarvittaessa saan apua pomolta ja työkavereilta (ja ylimääräistä energiaa äänikirjoista)."

Kuvaksi Veronika valitsi juuri siivotun Maija-asuntomme, joka sijaitsee Kunnantalon vieressä osoitteessa Parviaisentie 5.

ENG/ Amongst other pieces of art at Unesco World Hertage site: Aalto Works - Säynätsalo Town Hall, there is a wooden relief by Alvar Aalto himself. It was a byproduct of a wood-bending exercise, in which softened tube-like laminas along with glue were poured into a mould. The relief has no official name, but for many, it brings to mind chanterelle mushrooms.

FIN/ Unesco maailmanperintökohde Aalto Works - Säynätsalon kunnantalolta löytyy muiden taideteosten joukosta eräs puinen reliefi, itse Alvar Aallon kädestä. Teos syntyi puuntaivutusharjoituksen tuloksena. Kyseisessä tekniikassa pehmennettyjä puupuikkoja ja liimaa kasattiin muottiin. Teoksella ei ole virallista nimeä, m***a monille teoksen muodosta tulee mieleen kanttarellit.

At Säynätsalo Town Hall we have the iconic Artek stools – both the three-legged and four-legged versions, known as Stool 60 and Stool E60. Architect and designer Alvar Aalto began experimenting with wood bending in the late 1920s and in collaboration with the furniture maker Otto Korhonen, developed a groundbreaking process that resulted in the L-legged stool, manufactured commercially in the 1930s.

Although Alvar is officially credited with the design, his wife and professional partner, Aino, played a key role in the huge commercial success of the stool and the wider Artek business around it.

So, why two versions and what is the difference? The original three-legged stool was crafted out of Finnish birch with its three L-shaped wooden legs, designed to stack perfectly and beautifully. It was considered to be reasonably stable even on rough surfaces but it was perhaps not so stable to stand on – which people sometimes did! So, the four-legged stool was manufactured; it was considered to be more stable for sitting and for standing on. However, it did not stack so well nor so beautifully!

A lot of people wonder how Alvar Aalto's japanese influences came to be in the Unesco world heritage site - Aalto Works: Säynätsalo Town Hall. Indeed, Japan does not seem like the most likely source of inspiration for a Finnish architect. Originally Aalto got introduced to japanese design through the 1935 book "The Japanese House" by prominent Japanese architect Tetsurō Yoshida. It was originally published in Germany as "Das Japanische Wohnhaus", which is the version discovered by Aalto. The book was supposed to be a comprehensive introduction to japanese architecture for a western audience. Many of the features highglighted by Yoshida are prominent in the Town Hall. For example, a seamless connection between the building and the surrounding nature, as well as the use of natural materials and even sliding doors.

📸 Photographic artist Emmi Minkkinen’s exhibition "Between Soft Borders" is on display at the Taipuu Gallery until September 30.

📆 Our opening hours change starting September 1, 2026:
Mon–Fri: You can book a one-hour visit starting at 14:00 or 15:00; the visit includes a video-guided tour.
Sat: The Town Hall is open to the public from 12:00 to 15:00, with a live guided tour in Finnish at 14:00.
Sun: Visits can be arranged separately.
Private group visits are also possible at other times.

Kaksi Aallon UNESCO-kohdetta yhdellä matkalla – yövy Säynätsalon kunnantalolla!

Syyskuu on hienoa aikaa kokea Alvar Aallon Säynätsalo rauhassa.

🏛️ Yövy Säynätsalon kunnantalolla, yhdessä Aallon merkittävimmistä rakennuksista ja osana Aalto Works -UNESCO-maailmanperintökohdetta.

🌿 Majoittujana voit varata myös opastetun vierailun Muuratsalon koetalolle – toiseen UNESCO-kohteeseen vain muutaman kilometrin päähän. Pienessä opastusryhmässä Koetaloon ja sen ainutlaatuiseen ympäristöön ehtii tutustua rauhassa – ilman kiirettä.

Samalla matkalla on helppo piipahtaa myös Jyväskylän yliopiston Aalto-kampuksella – kolmannessa Aalto Works -UNESCO-kohteessa – sekä Aalto2-museokeskuksessa.

Ja kannattaa jättää aikaa itse Säynätsalollekin: järvimaisemille, metsäpoluille ja saaren paikallisille palveluille.

In an article for the Nordic Journal of Architectural Research (issue 1/2023), Jonas Malmberg discusses six main artworks in the UNESCO world heritage site: Aalto Works - Säynätsalo Town Hall.
1. "The Dancer", sculpture by Wäino Aaltonen, next to the fountain in the courtyard
2. Relief by Alvar Aalto in the stairway on the way to the council hall
The rest of the artworks discussed by Malmberg are all upstairs in the council hall.
3. Vision of a work by Picasso, which never came to fruition (empty niche)
4. The roof trusses of the council chamber, the "butterfly trusses"
5. Map of Säynätsalo, an alsecco painting by Fritz Hilbert
6. Unnamed painting by Fernand Léger
Malmberg states: "The union of other artist's works with Aalto's architecture was more obvious here than in any of his earlier or subsequent projects."

FIN/ Kiireinen lauantaipäivä UNESCOn maailmanperintökohteessa, Aalto Works - Säynätsalon kunnantalo
9:00 Harri tuli töihin, koska italialainen valokuvaaja Federico saapui valokuvaamaan rakennusta.
10:00 Harri teki toimistohommia ja palaveerasi Gladysin kanssa.
11:45 Taimi saapui töihin ja Harri lähti siivoamaan Hugo-asuntoa (Veronikan vapaapäivä).
12:00 Kunnantalo avasi ovensa.
12:30 Englanninkielinen kierros, jonka opasti Gladys.
13:00 Mira lähti pitämään Wivi Lönn & Hanna Parviainen -kierrosta.
13:15 LVI-liitosta saapui 55 vierasta, joita opastivat kahdessa erässä Taimi ja Tuomas.
14:30 Suomenkielinen opastuskierros, jonka piti Harrin nopean koordinoinnin ansiosta Tuomas, samalla kun Taimi lähti pitämään taukoaan. Samalla myös Gladys opasti kahta italialaista, jotka olivat vahingossa varanneet osallistumisen suomenkielisen kierrokseen.
Kävijöitä on ollut jo yli satapäinen joukko. Päivä jatkuu toimistossa odottelemalla saapuvia majoittujia, ja Tuomas lähtee vielä opastamaan majoittujia koetalolle.

ENG/ A busy Saturday at a UNESCO World Heritage site - Aalto Works, Säynätsalo Town Hall
9:00 Harri came to work, because an italian photographer Federico was taking pictures at the building.
10:00 Harri did some office work and met with Gladys.
11:45 Taimi came to work and Harri left to clean the Hugo apartment (Veronika has a day off)
12:00 The Town Hall opened.
12:30 English guided tour, guided by Gladys.
13:00 Mira left to guide the Wivi Lönn & Hanna Parviainen walking tour.
13:15 Fifty people from the Finnish association of HVAC technicians arrived. They got guided tours in two groups by Taimi and Tuomas.
14:30 The finnish guided tour, guided by Tuomas due to Harri's quick coordination skills, while Taimi went to have their break. At the same time Gladys guided two italians.
There have already been over a hundred visitors today. The day continues at in the main office, waiting for arriving overnight guests. Tuomas is also guiding a group of guests at the experimental house.

Kiitos vierailusta tuoreessa UNESCOn maailmanperintökohteessa Sisustussuunnittelijat SI ry! Parikymmentä sisustussuunnittelijaa inspiroituivat kunnantalolla ja kirjastossa, Alvar ja Elissa Aallon, m***a myös Maija Heikinheimon jalanjäljillä.

🌿 Säynätsalon kunnantalon vehreät asukkaat

Kunnantalon suuret ikkunat ja valoisat sisätilat tarjoavat kodin monenlaisille viherkasveille. Kasvit kuuluivat rakennukseen jo alkuperäisen suunnitelman mukaan, sillä sisätiloihin suunniteltiin puiset kasvilaatikot.

Rakennuksen oltua pitkään suljettuna sisällä ei kuitenkaan ollut enää yhtään kasvia. Noin kymmenen vuotta sitten aloimme yhdessä paikallisen kukkakauppiaan kanssa pohtia, millaiset kasvit viihtyisivät kunnantalon valoisissa ja varsin välimerellisissä tunnelmissa.

Nyt kasvilaatikoissa kasvavat muun muassa aloet ja gasteriat, kiinanruusu, posliinikukka sekä pari sitruspensasta.

🌿 The green residents of Säynätsalo Town Hall

The Town Hall’s large windows and light-filled interiors provide a home for many kinds of houseplants. Plants were part of the building’s original design, with wooden planters incorporated into the interior.

However, after the building had been closed for a long period, there were no plants left inside. About ten years ago, together with a local florist, we began considering which plants would thrive in the Town Hall’s light-filled and distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere.

Today, the planters are home to aloes and gasterias, a Chinese hibiscus, a wax plant and a couple of citrus shrubs.

Can you identify the plants in the photos? You are also welcome to come and see them in person – and explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the same time. 🌱
