Kvarken Archipelago - World Heritage Site

Kvarken Archipelago - World Heritage Site The Kvarken Archipelago is the only Finnish natural heritage on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Both fish and archipelago birds thrive in these shallow waters.

The broad Kvarken archipelago consists of forested islands and the labyrinth of the inner archipelago, as well as the mosaic-like outer archipelago with its reefs and islets. The common black guillemot nest among rocks and boulders. A white-tailed eagle that sails above the islands is also a common sight.

The conservation outlook for the High Coast / Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site has been assessed as "good" in the latest assessment cycle.
The conservation outlook for the geological features of the site, which are the basis for its Outstanding Universal Value, is good. However growing concerns exist regarding its important biodiversity values. The marine environment within the site is facing a multitude of threats, most of them being a consequence of the threats facing the Baltic Sea as a whole.
Management of the transboundary site has significantly improved due to the Joint Management Plan developed in 2023 and the increased engagement of important stakeholders.

The World Heritage Gateway Visitor Centre has received STF (Sustainable Travel Finland) status
In May 2024, the World Heritage Gateway Visitor Centre, which is maintained by the Kvarken World Heritage Association, was granted the right to start using the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label of Visit Finland.
Sustainable Travel Finland is a national sustainable tourism programme managed by Visit Finland. The criteria include strategies for working with ecological, socio-cultural and economic sustainability.
The Kvarken World Heritage Association participates in the Sustainable Travel Finland network by being a socially, culturally and economically sustainable destination. The World Heritage Gate visitor centre by the Replot Bridge in Korsholm has been established primarily to provide information about Finland's only natural heritage area, the Kvarken Archipelago, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We tell about our exciting history, our unique land uplift landscape and encourage and inform about visits to the neighbouring region. The World Heritage Gateway is an easily accessible visitor centre, adapted to receive all kinds of visitors.
