Metsähallitus executes wilderness supervision both on land, waters and in the air.

Within the ongoing Our
Saimaa Seal LIFE project, fishing is actively supervised around the lake Saimaa this summer.

🎏 A few illegal fishing nets were found while the restrictions regarding fishing with nets were still in effect in the home waters of the Saimaa ringed seal. The most typical offences found are nets and fish-traps with
missing contact info and traps that are poorly marked. Additionally, quite many loose-throated fish-traps (in which the throat opens wider than 15 cm) are still found.

🐟 Altogether the number of different fishing traps has decreased during the past years. The fishing traps
must be set in a way they will cause no danger to other animals.

💚 The restrictions regarding fishing nets and traps at lake Saimaa have been set to protect especially the most dangerous period in the lives of the young Saimaa ringed seals. In the beginning of summer, the pups are starting their independent lives and are in danger of drowning in the fishing traps.

Happy 112 Day! 📱Knowing where you are is an important part of enjoying the outdoors safely.

🌲Karhunkierros - Oulanka Park 🌲◾️ You can find these signs all the way from Hautajärvi to Ruka, once every kilometer. The number on the left indicates the distance to Hautajärvi and the number on the right indicates the distance to Ruka. If you get into an emergency, and you don’t know where you are, you can give the coordinates on the signs to the emergency center.
However, it’s even better if you install the 112 Suomi app on your phone.
◾️ Please note that the cell phone battery can drain fast in cold weather.

🌲 Riisitunturi National Park 🌲
Some safety tips before hiking in Riisitunturi:
◾️The heavy snow on the trees looks beautiful, but it is very heavy. Therefore it’s best to admire it from a distance.
◾️In snowfall and windy weather, your own tracks and even marked trails can be covered in snow very quickly. Stay on track of where you are at all times.
◾️Keep an eye on route markings. There are snowmobile tracks used by the service in the area that are not official routes and are not marked on the terrain.
◾️Plan your hike according to your fitness level, the weather forecast and the length of the day.
◾️Make sure to pack safety gear such as snow shoes, ice spikes for your shoes, headlamp and a map and a compass.
◾️Take enough food and hot beverages with you.
◾️The road leading to the Riisitunturi parking area is very narrow and you should be very careful, when passing another car. Otherwise your car can get stuck on the side of the road.

🌲Korouoma Nature Reserve 🌲
◾️You should never go underneath the icefalls without a helmet. There is a risk of falling ice and stones.
◾️Do not go climbing on the icefalls without proper training or guidance.
◾️The trails are covered with snow and ice, and therefore it’s always good to have snow shoes and ice spikes for your shoes.
◾️When planning your hike, take the length of the day and the weather forecast into
consideration. In the Northern winter, the sun sets early and the weather can change quickly.

Spooky calls of desire in the night!

When winter starts to turn towards spring, it is time for owls to start to plan for nesting and having young.

Several species of owls can be heard calling for company in the night.
Best time to go out and listen, is late in the evening on a calm and not very cold night. Walking on quiet roads going through or by a forest is the easiest way to spot owl calls.

Here are some hints to specify who is hooting:
🦉 Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus): A series of short deep whistles lasting several seconds.
🦉 Pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum): Whistling call similar to call of Bullfinch, repeated at intervals
of about one second.
🦉 Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo): A deep, hollow, far-reaching “UU-hu”.
🦉 Great grey owl (Strix nebulosa): A hollow hoot “uuh” repeated at intervals of about a second around ten times.
