Fiji Corrections Service Clarifies Misinformation Regarding Recent Incident at Maximum Correctional Centre
03 June, 2026 - The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) wishes to address and correct misinformation currently circulating on social media regarding a recent snap search operation conducted at the Maximum Correctional Centre.
On 01 and 02 June 2026, correctional personnel conducted planned snap searches within C Wing of the Maximum Corrections Centre as part of ongoing efforts to maintain institutional security and prevent the possession of contraband items.
During the operation, inmate MX Vilikesa Delana was found in possession of a mobile phone, batteries, and a charger, while inmate MX Isaia Bobo was found in possession of suspected contraband concealed inside a bar of washing soap. These matters are currently subject to internal investigation and disciplinary processes.
During a subsequent search operation on 02 June 2026, inmate MX Usaia Kilaiverata became verbally abusive towards correction officers after approaching the Officer in Charge regarding a personal request.
Despite being instructed to wait, he continued his disruptive behaviour and later physically resisted officers and attempted to assault a correctional officer.
Correctional officers responded using only the necessary and reasonable force required to safely restrain the inmate and restore order within the facility.
The inmate was subsequently segregated in accordance with established correctional procedures.
The Fiji Corrections Service categorically refutes claims circulating on social media alleging that MX Usaia Kilaiverata, MX Vilikesa Delana, or MX Isaia Bobo were injured during the operation or confined in segregation without clothing.
Following the incident, MX Usaia Kilaiverata was examined by the Senior Medical Officer, Dr Orisi, and attending nursing staff. The medical assessment confirmed that he had sustained no injuries and was medically cleared. No injuries were reported among corrections officers or other inmates during the operation.
Furthermore, allegations that inmates were placed in a "dark cell" without clothing are entirely false. All inmates placed in segregation are managed in accordance with established policies, operational procedures, and applicable standards governing inmate welfare, safety, and security.
Members of the public are encouraged to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely on official Fiji Corrections Service communications for accurate and factual updates as these men have families.
