Fiji Corrections Service Clarifies Misinformation Regarding Recent Incident at Maximum Correctional Centre

03 June, 2026 - The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) wishes to address and correct misinformation currently circulating on social media regarding a recent snap search operation conducted at the Maximum Correctional Centre.

On 01 and 02 June 2026, correctional personnel conducted planned snap searches within C Wing of the Maximum Corrections Centre as part of ongoing efforts to maintain institutional security and prevent the possession of contraband items.

During the operation, inmate MX Vilikesa Delana was found in possession of a mobile phone, batteries, and a charger, while inmate MX Isaia Bobo was found in possession of suspected contraband concealed inside a bar of washing soap. These matters are currently subject to internal investigation and disciplinary processes.

During a subsequent search operation on 02 June 2026, inmate MX Usaia Kilaiverata became verbally abusive towards correction officers after approaching the Officer in Charge regarding a personal request.

Despite being instructed to wait, he continued his disruptive behaviour and later physically resisted officers and attempted to assault a correctional officer.
Correctional officers responded using only the necessary and reasonable force required to safely restrain the inmate and restore order within the facility.

The inmate was subsequently segregated in accordance with established correctional procedures.

The Fiji Corrections Service categorically refutes claims circulating on social media alleging that MX Usaia Kilaiverata, MX Vilikesa Delana, or MX Isaia Bobo were injured during the operation or confined in segregation without clothing.

Following the incident, MX Usaia Kilaiverata was examined by the Senior Medical Officer, Dr Orisi, and attending nursing staff. The medical assessment confirmed that he had sustained no injuries and was medically cleared. No injuries were reported among corrections officers or other inmates during the operation.

Furthermore, allegations that inmates were placed in a "dark cell" without clothing are entirely false. All inmates placed in segregation are managed in accordance with established policies, operational procedures, and applicable standards governing inmate welfare, safety, and security.

Members of the public are encouraged to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely on official Fiji Corrections Service communications for accurate and factual updates as these men have families.

23rd May, 2026 - Officers and staff of the Fiji Corrections Service gathered in numbers today at their respective divisional chapels around the country for the Commissioners Church Parade Pentecostal Service.

The special Sunday service was held to commemorate Pentecost Sunday and also to honor the remembrance of John Wesleyโ€™s spiritual experience on Aldersgate Day, observed annually on 24 May. The day marks the 1738 spiritual awakening of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, where he famously described his heart as being โ€œstrangely warmed.โ€

At the Central-Eastern Divisional Chapel service, FCS Chaplain Reverend Iliesa Soita delivered a sermon on the theme of Repentance and the Power of Change through Jesus Christ. Reverend Soita spoke strongly on the responsibilities of officers as husbands and wives towards their spouses and families, while also encouraging young officers to earnestly pray for a good husband or wife and to turn away from sin through repentance and change in Christ.

Also addressing officers during the service was Acting Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Mr. Apolosa Veve, who challenged officers and staff on three key areas: Negligence, Ignorance, and whether individuals are leading by example in both their professional duties and personal lives.

Todayโ€™s church parade highlighted the importance of spiritual growth, personal accountability, family values, and servant leadership within the Fiji Corrections Service as officers continue to uphold their responsibilities to the organization and the people of Fiji.

FCS congratulates its FNU Graduates

14.05.26

The Fiji Corrections Service congratulates the 12 personnel who graduated at the recent FNU Graduations held in Suva.

The graduates are the second cohort of personnel from the FCS to under-go this intensive 12-month course to attain their Advance Diploma in Leadership and Management, tailored to meet the demands for those working in and for those eyed for positions of leadership in their various institutions.

The course curriculum covered areas such as Critical Thinking, Solving Complex Problems, Managing Budgets and Financial Plans, Managing Organizational Change, Developing and Implementing Force, and Developing Organisational Strategies and implementing and sustaining a Work Health Safety System at work.
The graduates were engaged in a combination of classroom and online learning and juggling work and family commitments at the same time over the course of 12-months.

โ€œIt really put to the test our time management and also choosing between studies and other activities that we do outside of work, it was quite tough but with the support of our family and co-workers we all managed to complete the required work to graduate,โ€™โ€™ says Duty Officer Nasinu CC, PCO Ilisoni Narawa.

โ€œThis is not only an achievement for me but also for my family and I thank the Leadership of FCS for encouraging us to keep pursuing academic excellence, I also congratulate my Officer in Charge, ASC Waqabaca who also undertook this journey with me.

OC Pre-Release Center, CCO Atunaisa Maiono said to have attained his first ever formal tertiary qualification ever has changed his whole perspective towards self-improvement.

โ€œI worked my way up through the ranks with no formal qualification but just hard work, when I attended my brotherโ€™s graduation in New Zealand in 2024, it inspired and taught me that education has no age limit and so with the support from the FCS I enrolled in this course and soon realized I could do it.โ€

โ€œThis journey has shown me that dreams do not have an expiry date, and I thank my wonderful wife for the support every day, my work colleagues and the leadership at FCS for giving me this opportunity.โ€

For mother of four, COA Marryanne Delanaโ€™s, the achievement stood out as a reminder that success is often built on years of patience, sacrifice and determination especially when met with situations that would make many give up.

โ€œIn 2012 I lost my father then in 2016, we lost our home to Cyclone Winston and my dreams of doing my studies always took second place because we had to recover from our losses. I needed to focus on my duties with the Corrections Service and earn a living for my young family.

โ€œIn 2024 I again tried to continue and stopped again as I was raising a young family, and last year I just put my head down and tried to complete it with the support of my mum and my work colleagues. Today is also special because it is also my birthday,โ€™โ€™ she added.

COA Delana graduated with a Diploma in Quantity Surveying. She is based at the Projects Unit of the FCS, based at the National Headquarters.

The FCS continues to encourage and support the upgrading, upskilling of its personnel through the attainment of formal qualifications to add value to their work and help consolidate the professional standards required in the running of the organization.
