Honoured to meet and congratulate the Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Hon. James Marape, at APEC Haus in Port Moresby yesterday evening following the successful conclusion of the Melanesian Ocean Summit.

On behalf of the Hon. Prime Minister of Fiji, the Government and people of Fiji, I conveyed our sincere appreciation to Prime Minister Marape and the Government and people of PNG for the warm hospitality and for hosting such a superbly organised and important gathering for Melanesia and the wider Pacific.

The Summit reflected the growing importance of Melanesian leadership in shaping the future of our Blue Pacific — particularly in ocean governance, sustainable development, resource management, climate resilience and the protection of our shared maritime heritage.

There is no question that the conversations and partnerships strengthened during this Summit will create important opportunities for our peoples and future generations.

Vinaka vakalevu PNG, and congratulations once again to Prime Minister Marape and your team on a job very well done.

A very warm and productive bilateral meeting yesterday afternoon in Port Moresby with my Melanesian brother, the Honourable Justin Tkatchenko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Papua New Guinea.

Our discussions reaffirmed the deep historical, cultural and Christian ties that have long connected Fiji and Papua New Guinea, and the importance of continuing to strengthen that partnership in an increasingly complex global environment.

We discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation across a number of areas of mutual interest, including regional integration, economic cooperation, maritime and ocean-related priorities, regional security, connectivity, and strengthening Melanesian cooperation through the MSG and the broader Pacific architecture.

I also conveyed Fiji’s sincere appreciation to Prime Minister James Marape, Minister Tkatchenko, and the Government and people of Papua New Guinea for the excellent hospitality extended to the Prime Minister of Fiji and our delegation during the Melanesian Ocean Summit.

The Summit itself reflects the growing importance of Melanesian leadership and regional solidarity as we work together to build a peaceful, resilient and prosperous Blue Pacific Continent for future generations.

Vinaka vakalevu PNG for your friendship and leadership.

Fiji and Australia are family. We share a vision of peace, stability and prosperity for our countries. 🇫🇯🇦🇺

Trade Minister, the Hon Sakiasi Ditoka and I discussed how we can work together to build that prosperity for each other, and for the benefit of our entire Pacific Family.

We face shared challenges in a complex environment, and we will continue our work to address them together.

I also had a productive engagement with Australia’s Minister for Trade and Tourism, Hon Don Farrell, on the afternoon of Tuesday 20th April.

Our discussions focused on practical ways to strengthen trade between our two countries and to progressively address the trade imbalance through targeted, realistic strategies.

We were aligned in our view that the current global fuel disruptions are not an isolated event, but part of a pattern of increasing uncertainty in global supply chains.

In that context, we agreed on the importance of sound risk management and building economic resilience to better future-proof both our economies.

We also discussed the way forward on PACER Plus. I conveyed my commitment to undertake thorough consultations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure Fiji’s position is carefully considered and grounded in our national interest.

Australia remains an important partner, and engagements like this ensure we are not just reacting to challenges, but preparing deliberately for what lies ahead.

Vinaka saka vakalevu.

On Tuesday 20th April, I met with the Honorable Pat Conroy, Australia’s Minister for the Pacific Island Affairs and Defence Industries, for a focused and constructive discussion on the evolving security landscape in our region.

We spoke candidly about emerging pressures, including fuel scarcity and the very real implications these disruptions pose for national and regional stability. I emphasised the importance of practical, forward-looking contingency arrangements under the Vuvale Partnership — not just in supply assurance, but in strengthening resilience through storage capacity and coordinated response mechanisms.

Our dialogue also extended to the broader strategic vision of the Ocean of Peace — a Pacific anchored in stability, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty. This requires not only shared principles, but deliberate action and trusted partnerships.

Australia remains a key Vuvale partner, and engagements like this ensure we are aligned, prepared, and acting in the best interests of our people and the wider Pacific family.

Vinaka vakalevu.
