Korea–Pacific Islands Senior Officials Meet to Advance Regional Priorities

The 8th Korea–Pacific Islands Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) was held in Nadi, Fiji, on 21 May 2026, bringing together senior officials from the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Members to advance regional cooperation and shared priorities.

The SOM was co-chaired by the Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Ms Eui-hae Chung and the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Joseph Ma’ahanua representing the PIF Chair.

Discussions focused on strengthening strategic dialogue and development cooperation aligned with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, particularly across climate action, maritime affairs and fisheries, and economic resilience, while advancing the ROK – Pacific Partnership.

CIHC Suva warmly congratulates the Governments of Australia and Fiji on depositing their instruments of ratification for the Pacific Resilience Facility Treaty this afternoon at the PIF Secretariat.

Hosted by Foreign Ministers Hon. Penny Wong and Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka with members of the Pacific Diplomatic Corps, the occasion marked a major milestone for the Blue Pacific.

Australia became the 8th country to ratify the Treaty, bringing it into force, with Fiji following shortly after as the 9th. A proud proud moment for our region 🌏🌊

Cook Islands Participates In Fourth COP31 Pacific Senior Officials Taskforce Meeting

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration (MFAI) continued its engagement in the fourth meeting of the COP31 Pacific Senior Officials Taskforce (PSOT) through joint participation with the Office of the Prime Minister, Climate Change Cook Islands. The meeting was held in Nadi, Fiji from 19–20 February 2026.

The Taskforce, operating under the guidance of Pacific Climate Change Ministers and co-chaired by Ms Esther O’Brien of Solomon Islands and Dr Sally Box of Australia, co-chairs of the COP31 PSOT Meeting, was established to coordinate regional preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), support Pacific engagement in the negotiations, and ensure Pacific priorities are reflected in both hosting arrangements and substantive outcomes.

Over the two-day meeting, senior officials received updates on the Türkiye–Australia COP31 partnership modalities, preparations for the UNFCCC pre-COP to be hosted in the Pacific, and Australia’s role as COP31 President of Negotiations. Discussions also covered coordination arrangements for Pacific participation in both the negotiation track and the Action Agenda, including thematic priorities, envoy appointments, and engagement pathways for Pacific representatives, including a youth engagement component to reflect the voices of young Pacific Islanders.

The PSOT meeting reaffirmed the strategic importance of early engagement and coordinated Pacific advocacy, ensuring the region’s priorities are visible and effectively represented in COP31 negotiations. Preparations for the upcoming COP31 Climate Ministers Meeting in Brisbane, Australia on 19–20 March 2026 were also considered, with Ministers set to provide strategic guidance on Pacific priorities under the partnership arrangement.

“This pre-COP offers yet another key moment for Pacific Island countries to have our voices heard on the global climate stage. Bringing the world into the Pacific, onto the front line of climate change, is a powerful opportunity to shape discussions from the outset and ensure that our perspectives, priorities, and solutions are central to COP31 outcomes,” said TMOD Foreign Service Officer Peka Fisher.

The Cook Islands will continue to engage through the PSOT mechanism under the guidance of Pacific Climate Change Ministers as regional preparations advance.

What a proud moment for our nation 🇨🇰🇨🇰 Congratulations to our Cook Islands Women’s Rugby League Team on their outstanding win over Tonga to claim the Pacific Championship Bowl in Port Moresby!

This time last year, we had the honour of hosting both our men’s and women’s teams in Suva. Today, our Vaine Toa have shown what resilience, teamwork, and belief can achieve.

Special acknowledgement to Captain Kiana Takairangi, whose steady leadership and pride in our culture continue to shine through. How fitting that this victory comes on Papua New Guinean soil, where our Cook Islands heritage has long flourished.

Kia manuia also to the coaches and management team for their commitment and hard work behind the scenes.

🇫🇯 Honouring Fiji’s 55th Independence Anniversary 🇫🇯

This morning, the Cook Islands High Commission marked Fiji Day with an office reception, celebrating the theme of unity and pride and sharing breakfast together over delicious Fijian cuisine with a Cook Islands flair.

Later today, the High Commission will join fellow Pacific missions at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Headquarters to commemorate this significant milestone and reflect on Fiji’s remarkable 55-year journey of nationhood, strength, and community.
