A recent rescue conducted highlighted the importance of cooperation and coordination with stakeholders given our geographical constraints.

The Republic of Fiji Navy through the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Fiji coordinated the early morning rescue of 19 crew members from a foreign-flagged vessel that ran aground and capsized in waters near northern Kadavu which was conducted by Kokomo Private Island Fiji resort. The resort have been involved in a number of rescues in the past highlighting their commitment to humanitarian support.

The RFN and RCC FIJI extends an immense gratitude to Kokomo Island Resort for their assistance in deploying a volunteer team to aid in the rescue of individuals who had sought refuge on life rafts.

The four fishermen who went missing from Yanuca on Wednesday night have been found.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu said the four drifted to Lomawai in Sigatoka and are all safe.

“They drifted in a Fiber fishing boat on Wednesday from Yanuca at around 05.00pm due to problem with the engine. This morning at 02.00am they managed to paddle the boat using the seat ply and reached the shore at Namata, Nadi,” said ACP Driu.

He said the four went to a nearest house and use a phone to inform their family of their status.

ACP Driu would like to acknowledge all stakeholders and members of the communities who had a helping hand in the search and rescue efforts.

“The search has now been called off and I am calling all on everyone to please continue to monitor the Marine time weather forecast before heading out to sea.”

❗️Reminder that this is the season to be happy, however, to all seafarers lets be vigilant and not take our guards down on this festive season.

The Republic of Fiji Navy says laxity is one of many reasons people go missing at sea stating that the RFN is concerned with non-compliance to safety by seafarers.
