Exciting times ahead for our team, and our partners for our work on Fiji's critically endangered species.
Led by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund, in collaboration with IUCN Species Survival Commission, the project is the largest single philanthropic initiative dedicated exclusively to recovering species classified as Critically Endangered and Extinct in the Wild, on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species across continents.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as Bird Flu, is a serious disease that can spread quickly among poultry and wild birds.

As part of ’s continuous commitment to protecting Fiji's agriculture, environment and economy, we are urging poultry farmers, backyard flock owners and the public to remain vigilant and practice good biosecurity measures.

✅ Restrict access to poultry areas
✅ Keep poultry separated from wild birds
✅ Clean and disinfect equipment regularly
✅ Report unusual illness or sudden bird deaths immediately

Early detection and reporting are critical in preventing the spread of disease.

🐿️ Five Australian marsupials, newly recognised as a result of taxonomic review, have been confirmed as on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The species confirmed extinct were:

• The little bettong (Bettongia haoucharae)
• The crested-tailed mulgara (Dasycercus cristicauda)
• The southern mulgara (Dasycercus archeri)
• The northern mulgara (Dasycercus woolleyae)
• The little mulgara (Dasycercus marlowi)

With no individuals reported for at least 60 years, this brings the total number of modern mammal extinctions in Australia to over 40.

Predation by feral cats and foxes is the leading cause for their decline, with change a growing threat to those remaining.

In June 2015, our Founding Trustee, Dr Dick Watling, raised concerns on the plight of Fiji’s pigeons (https://www.fijitimes.com.fj/on-behalf-of-pigeons/).
Today we welcome the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji to not open the shooting season this year, and to ensure we have good baseline data and monitoring protocols in place to guide future decisions.
