Ministry of Information & National Archives The National Archives of Fiji (NAF) is a department under the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts.

The Archives is a vast trove of information about Fiji held on documents occupying over 6km of shelving along with 2000 hours of historical AV footage and over 100,000 historical photos. The department is responsible for the acquisition, care, preservation and administration of the permanent public records of Fiji, and ensuring that these records are available to Government, the people of Fiji and

the public at large for information and research purposes. NAF's reference Library is also the National Deposit Library. All local publishers are required to submit a copy of their publications here to be held as part of Fiji's documentary heritage. These functions are defined in the Public Records Act, Cap 108, and the Deposit of Books Act, Cap 109 of the Laws of Fiji.

Congratulations Dr Anawaite

It is our pleasure to introduce our next Pacific Development Field Research Grant awardee — Anawaite Matadradra-Dolavale.

Ana is an emerging Pacific scholar based in the School of Law and Social Sciences at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji. She holds a Master of Arts in Development Studies and a PhD in History from the University of the South Pacific.

Ana's current research focuses on social cohesion, trust, and community life within informal settlements in Fiji. While research on informal settlements has often focused on relocation, housing, infrastructure, and environmental vulnerability, her work explores how people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds build relationships, support one another, and navigate everyday life within shared community spaces. The research also examines how migration, settlement experiences, displacement, and colonial legacies continue to shape community relationships and social cohesion today.

"I am truly grateful to DevNet NZ for awarding me this research grant and for supporting emerging Pacific scholars and community-based research across the Pacific region. Vinaka vakalevu for this opportunity," said Ana.

Congratulations Ana!

The National Archives of Fiji celebrates Girmit Day with images from its historical photo collection, This years theme “From Roots to Wings: Carrying the Girmit Flame Forward” honors the legacy of indentured laborers through a focus on resilience, unity, and heritage.

This year we highlight Emigration Passes No 1 and No. 60538. The first and last numbered passes in the Indentured Indian Labour System records series. We also share images from the repatriation voyage of some indentured indians who returned in 1949 and men at a celebration at Ruve Park, Samabula in 1968.
