The West is not a dumping ground. Importing waste into our provinces is disrespectful, harmful, and unacceptable.
Our land, our oceans, our people deserve better.
This is an insult — and the people will carry the burden.

“THE NORTH CALLS FOR LEADERSHIP CHANGE”

“The chiefs and the people of Vanua Levu that Unity Fiji visited in its tour last week have strongly called for a change to the leadership of the country,” stated Savenaca Narube, the leader of the party. The Party Leader launched its official campaign in Vanua Levu last week. The team were warmly hosted by the people of Macuata, Bua and Cakaudrove.

“The people openly expressed their anger of being betrayed by this government. They were frustrated that many of the government’s promises to them remain unfulfilled.”
A high Chief said, “While we had high hopes for this Government to change many hurtful things that Fiji First did, but they have done very little.”

The people in Vanualevu eagerly welcomed the credibility that Unity Fiji bring to the leadership of the country, and its transformation plans to address the root causes of poverty for Vanua Levu and improve the livelihoods of the people. After explaining his wide experience in leadership and their impact on the country, the leader of Unity Fiji assured the people that Unity Fiji has the experience, training and character to fulfil its promises.

The former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji and Permanent Secretary for Finance stressed to the people, “Why support a party that has not delivered? Our credentials far exceed the leaders of any political parties registered in Fiji. This should give people the confidence that we will deliver what we promised to deliver.”

Narube stated, “Despite all the look North policies of many governments, they have all failed miserably. Vanua Levu remains one of the least developed parts of Fiji. In addition to improving the essential services to the people of roads, medical services, water supply, housing and so forth, very importantly, Unity Fiji will sustainably raise the incomes of the people through its Economic Transportation Program (ETP). Past governments including this one have failed to do both which has resulted in lower quality of life and deeper poverty.”

“Instead, the government of Fiji First and the current Government have filled their pockets, increased their pay and allowances, are driven in expensive tinted vehicles with bodyguards, and increased overseas travel.”

In concluding, Narube urged the people of the North that, “We must stop this merry go round now. We must vote for leadership that looks after the people and are guided by the biblical principles of openness, selflessness and servanthood.

“THE WESTERN PROVINCES WILL BEAR THE RISKS”

A Statement by Savenaca Narube, Leader of Unity Fiji

“The government’s proposal to import waste and dump it in the West is grossly
disrespectful and indecent, and the Prime Minister should have ensured that it never
saw the light of day,” says Savenaca Narube, Leader of Unity Fiji

“Across social media and other platforms, the Western provinces regard this
proposal as an insult,” Narube adds.

“This proposal has come at a time when the Western provinces of Nadroga, Ba, and
Ra have strongly expressed the view that, despite the many natural resources they
provide for the benefit of all the people of Fiji, their interests continue not only to be
dismissed but also to be disregarded by this government. While their support has
helped political parties win elections, including those currently in government, their
requests remain unfulfilled. They feel exploited and betrayed. The dumping of
imported waste on their seashore only adds insult to injury.” The former Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji said, “If the Government wishes to increase Fiji’s foreign reserves, it should focus not on dumping imported rubbish anywhere in Fiji, but on raising the production and exports of our natural resources, such as agriculture, forestry, and mining, all of which have been declining over the last two decades. There is no sign of such a plan, and the best this Government can
come up with is importing trash.”

“The economic and financial assessments of this project ignore the high
environmental risks associated with it. If one assigns a monetary value to these
risks, the rate of return to the country of this project would be negative. Who pays the price? It is not the investor, who would have walked away laughing to
the bank. It is not this Government, who will no longer be here after lining their
pockets.”

“Tragically, it is the people of the Western provinces who will bear the burden. This is
their home. They have nowhere else to go.”

Narube concluded, “It is bewildering that this Government regularly makes
announcements that are either insensitive, disrespectful, or illogical. One would have
thought that after three and a half years, the Government would be wiser than when
it started.”

I could have played it safe — enjoyed the salary, the benefits, and become another yes‑man. But I could not turn my back on my people. True leadership is putting the people’s needs above your own, and that is why I chose truth over comfort, and I chose Fiji over fear.

Today, we pause as one nation to honour Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna — a leader whose courage, wisdom, and vision still guide Fiji. He taught us that leadership is service, that land is identity, and that unity is our greatest strength.

May his legacy continue to inspire us all.

Tribute to Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna by Savenaca Narube, the leader of Unity Fiji

On this day, Unity Fiji joins the people of Fiji to honour the life and legacy of one of our nation’s greatest statesmen, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna. The 29th of May should be a day of remembrance, gratitude, and reflection. It is a time when we acknowledge the immense contributions of a man whose vision and leadership helped lay the foundations of modern Fiji. Ratu Sukuna was a leader of extraordinary foresight. His life was marked by service—whether through his distinguished education abroad, his military service during World War I, or his tireless work upon returning home to guide Fiji toward unity and prosperity. He showed us that true leadership is not about privilege, but about sacrifice and responsibility.

One of his most enduring legacies is the establishment of the Native Land Trust Board, now the iTaukei Land Trust Board. Ratu Sukuna recognized that land was both the spiritual heart and economic backbone of our people. He sought to protect communal ownership while ensuring that land could be used productively for the benefit of all Fijians. His vision was inclusive, balancing tradition with development, and it remains a cornerstone of our society today.

The modern Fiji has so much to learn from Ratu Sukuna:

He listened, consulted, and sought consensus. He believed that authority must be exercised with respect and integrity. At a time when Fiji was navigating colonial structures and modernization, his ability to articulate the aspirations of his people while engaging constructively with our colonial rulers was remarkable. He reminded us that progress cannot come at the expense of our values, and unity cannot be achieved without respect for diversity. He demonstrated that leadership is about bringing people together for a common purpose. His life teaches us that the future of Fiji depends on our ability to honour our traditions while embracing innovation and change.

For us in Unity Fiji and for me personally, Ratu Sukuna’s legacy is a guiding light. His belief in consensus and inclusivity resonates deeply with my personal mission to build a nation where every voice matters and every community thrives. On this Ratu Sukuna Day, I call upon all Fijians to reflect on how we can embody his values in our daily lives. Let us ask ourselves whether we are listening to one another with respect. Are we working for the common good, or only for ourselves? These questions are the essence of what it means to be a citizen of Fiji.

Today, as we face global challenges—from economic uncertainties to climate change—we must draw upon his wisdom. We must remember that resilience comes from unity, and that our strength lies in our ability to work together as one people. To honour him is to commit ourselves to upholding respect, service, and integrity in all that we do. As we celebrate Ratu Sukuna Day, let us also celebrate the spirit of Fiji—our resilience, our diversity, and our shared destiny. The best way to honour Ratu Sukuna is not only to speak of his legacy but to live it, to embody his values in our actions, our decisions, and our relationships.

On behalf of Unity Fiji Party, I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to the memory of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna. May his legacy continue to guide us and may his vision for a united and prosperous Fiji remain alive in our hearts.

Vinaka vakalevu, and may God bless Fiji.
