HE Nor' Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia (“TYT”), attended the first diplomatic reception of the Philippine Embassy in Fiji on 11 June 2026 at the Holiday Inn in Suva. The event celebrated the 128th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.

The reception was hosted by Ambassador Noel M. Novicio, the first resident Philippine Ambassador to Fiji. In his speech, Ambassador Novicio spoke about the opening of the Philippine Embassy on 20 January 2026. He said the Embassy shows the Philippines' commitment to stronger ties with Fiji and the South Pacific, adding that both countries share values as maritime nations and can achieve more through closer cooperation.

TYT congratulated the Philippines and Ambassador Novicio on this historic milestone. He said that Malaysia and the Philippines are close neighbours in Southeast Asia. As fellow ASEAN members, Malaysia values the Philippines' expanded presence in Fiji. This helps all Southeast Asian nations work more closely with Pacific island countries.

The reception was attended by more than 100 guests. These included Fiji's Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General Baron Waqa, Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua, and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Michael Aroi. Ambassador Novicio also expressed appreciation for the condolences extended by TYT following the earthquake that struck the southern Philippines on 8 June.

TYT reaffirmed Malaysia's own commitment to Fiji. He noted that Malaysia works with Fiji in areas such as technical cooperation, education, and trade. He added that stronger diplomatic engagement from Southeast Asian countries benefits the entire Pacific region.

TYT wished the Philippines continued peace and progress, and looked forward to deeper Malaysia-Fiji cooperation alongside the Suva based diplomatic corps.

We recently joined a crucial conversation at The University of the South Pacific (USP). It was inspiring to attend the public panel, 'Ocean Governance at a Crossroads: Navigating Emerging Legal Frontiers Amidst the Threats of Deep-Sea Mining,' on June 10 and see policymakers, legal minds, academics, and civil society leaders putting their heads together. The discussions brought critical focus to the complex challenges facing our oceans, particularly the intense debate over the legal, environmental, and socio-economic considerations that arise when assessing deep-sea mining.

Highlighted by the panelists were the importance of science-based decision-making, international law, environmental stewardship, and regional cooperation in safeguarding marine ecosystems and ensuring the responsible management of ocean resources for future generations.

Healthy oceans are important for food security, economic development, environmental sustainability and the well-being of coastal communities. Very much valued are the opportunities to engage with stakeholders and exchange perspectives on issues that affect the Pacific and the wider international community.

We remain committed to engage with strategic partners such as policy makers, academia, and civil society organisations to promote peace stability, and prosperity for all.

On 9 June 2026, H.E. Nor’ Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia to the Republic of Fiji ("TYT"), met with representatives of The Oceano Azul Foundation to exchange views on developments relating to ocean governance, climate action, sustainable development, and related discussions in the Pacific region.

The discussion covered a range of issues affecting the Pacific, including the sustainable management of marine resources, the role of scientific research in policymaking, the importance of community participation in environmental governance, and the ongoing regional conversations on the future of ocean resources.

It is indeed important to recognize the importance of safeguarding the health of the world's oceans while supporting sustainable development and economic resilience. Effective ocean governance requires engagement with policy makers, civil society organisations, academic institutions, and local communities to ensure that marine resources continue to benefit present and future generations.

TYT remains committed to fostering dialogue with a broad range of stakeholders and enhancing understanding of issues that are crucial to the Pacific region and the international community. Such exchanges contribute to informed discussions on sustainability, climate resilience, and responsible stewardship of the ocean to promote peace stability, and prosperity for all.

Great insights and vital conversations at The University of the South Pacific (USP) recently. Joining a crowd of diplomats, Pacific academics, and civil society, we attended the public panel on “Decolonisation and Nuclear-Free Pacific: The Region’s Responsibility – What Have We Done and What Can We Do?” on 8 June 2026.

Perspectives were exchanged on issues affecting the Pacific, including environmental stewardship, sustainable resource management, and community participation.

Our intervention, which aimed to gain insights on terrestrial mining, resource extraction, and deep-sea mining generated further discussion on resource governance, local stakeholder engagement, compensation, and environmental stewardship.

This engagement reflects the importance we place on constructive dialogue with academia and civil society organisations to promote peace stability, and prosperity for all.

We also engaged with Malaysians from The Oceano Azul Foundation, who were in Fiji to participate in the inaugural State of the Pacific Ocean Convening and related engagements.

On 4 June 2026, H.E. Nor’ Azam Mohd Idrus, High Commissioner of Malaysia to the Republic of Fiji, held a productive engagement with Mrs. Kiti Temo, Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Fiji (“COP”). The engagement reaffirmed the enduring bilateral relations between Malaysia and Fiji, focusing extensively on human capital development through the MTCP - Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme.

During the engagement, COP expressed deep appreciation for the specialized training opportunities Malaysia has extended over the years. She highlighted that MTCP courses have had a profoundly positive impact on the professional capacity and operational efficiency of Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade.

Emphasized during the engagement was the premier quality and prestige of the MTCP. Since MTCP placements are intensely competitive and highly sought after by numerous recipient countries worldwide, COP views every training opportunity granted as a distinct honor, given the high demand and limited availability of slots. COP also hoped MTCP courses could be extended to senior officials as well.

This fruitful engagement highlights Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to South-South Cooperation. Through the sharing of institutional expertise and the fostering of meaningful human capital growth, Malaysia continues to elevate its credibility, shape positive partnerships, and contribute to the socioeconomic advancement of Fiji.
