The Fiji Crop and Livestock Council's main objective is to act as an apex forum for advocacy to better represent the needs of farmers to Government and Stakeholders, including financiers, aid, rehabilitation agencies and potential new investors. It will raise the profile of Fiji's farmers involved with crop and livestock production. It is comprised of 12 member farm associations that constitute th

e major components of the country's approximately 30,000 farmers in its non-sugar agricultural sector. Pig, Dairy, Beef, Sheep/Goat, Root Crop, Ginger, Kava, Honey, Fruit, Salad Vegetables and Coconut Associations, as well as Food Processors all play a major role in food productivity and security. The FCLC Secretariat will work with its member associations to introduce services to drive growth towards poverty alleviation, increased outputs and exports, and decrease imports. It will become a depository for data, statistical information collected from the field to better determine the success of sector development. It will offer a library with Internet and Mobile Phone access as a source of information to help farmers especially in the decision-making process. And through seminars and workshops it will provide opportunities for dialogue to better understand challenges to the industry.

Mobile Phone Applications:

1. Membership: a mobile app enabling users to register with FCLC via their mobile phone.

2. mAlerts: an information distribution system to allow FCLC to reach multiple members via SMS text messaging. This online system will be used by FCLC to send industry important messages targeted to audiences in defined locations.

3. mPrices: a market price tracking system, that will let users know the current weekly retail prices of a range of fresh produce at municipal markets around Fiji. This system will build on the current manual system of data collection, by using mobile phone technology to provide pricing information quickly and efficiently for use by all agriculture industry stakeholders and the Ministry of Agriculture. Farmers can access mPrices to make selling decisions, buyers and exporters can set best prices and others will use the information for planning, statistics and other non-trading uses.

4. mTips: an agricultural SMS tips messaging service available to FCLC members that provides useful information on growing crops, pest, disease control and practical advice to common problems faced by farmers.
