🇫🇯 Ni sa bula Vinaka! The recent launch of the iTaukei Glossary of Conservation and Climate Change Terms in Suva marks a major milestone in making climate and conservation discussions more accessible, culturally grounded and community-led across Fiji 🌿- supported by the World Bank EnABLE (Enhancing Access to Benefits while Lowering Emissions) Trust Fund.

It also shows that indigenous knowledge is not separate from climate science, but an essential part of it 🤝. By introducing these new and evolving terms, it helps make complex environmental ideas easier to understand, discuss and act on in ways that are rooted in culture and everyday life in Fiji 🇫🇯.

For Indigenous Fijians and holders of traditional knowledge, this means greater ownership of climate conversations, stronger participation in decision-making, and a better way to pass knowledge to younger generations 📚.

We’re proud to be part of this step toward protecting language, strengthening the vanua🌺. 🌏 🌿

🏥When people don’t have access to healthcare, the impact goes far beyond health. ⚠️ 📈

It can mean:
• Missing work 💼
• Losing income & jobs 💸
• Falling behind in school 📚
• Fewer opportunities over time ⏳

🌏In East Asia and the Pacific, investing in health workers is expanding access to care - especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas - while also supporting local jobs and strengthening communities. So - health workers help communities stay healthy and productive! 🤝 http://wrld.bg/ECyi50Z0UCP

MEDIA RELEASE: Strengthening Correspondent Banking Relationships Across the Region

18 May, 2026: Pacific Island countries, regional institutions and international partners will convene in Nadi, Fiji this week for the Pacific Risk Based Supervision Workshop as part of the Strengthening Correspondent Banking Relationships in the Pacific Project.

The three-day regional workshop held from 19-21 May will be co-hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretariat, World Bank and the Reserve Bank of Fiji bringing together financial regulators, technical experts and development partners to strengthen and advance practical solutions that support Correspondent Banking Relationships (CBRs) across the Pacific and, Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism

Correspondent Banking Relationships are essential to the Pacific region’s economic connectivity, enabling international payments, trade, remittances, tourism transactions and access to the global financial system.

As Pacific economies remain heavily reliant on these services, strengthening and sustaining CBR access continues to be a critical regional priority.

Talofa Lava, Kam na mauri, Bula Vinaka and Happy Monday! 🌺

Did you know that across East Asia and the Pacific, health workers do more than provide care—they help keep economies moving. They make it possible for people to stay healthy, go to school, earn a living, and support their families. 🏥

🙌That’s why health jobs and investing in health workers matters. Across the region, efforts are underway to:
• Train more health workers and create more jobs 👩‍⚕️
• Bring care closer to remote communities 🤝
• Build resilient health systems capable of withstanding shocks 📈

When health systems work well, people can work—and economies grow. Learn more: http://wrld.bg/ECyi50Z0UCP

Our latest Pacific Economic Update is clear: repeated shocks have slowed growth, but youth jobs can be a powerful driver of resilience and recovery.

By 2035, more than 600,000 young people will enter Pacific labour markets across 11 Pacific Island countries. That’s one‑third of the region’s future workforce. 🌏💼👩🏽‍💻👨🏾‍🌾

📌 The update argues that this can be seen as an immense opportunity for the Pacific, if the right foundations are put in place.

That means investing in skills, reliable water and energy, digital connectivity, and a strong business environment — so young Pacific people can turn talent into livelihoods, and growth into jobs. 🌱⚡💧

Social protection is about making sure people are not left behind when times get hard. It is about dignity, resilience, and helping communities face uncertainty with confidence. 🌏

This week, Papua New Guinea welcomed delegates from 12 Pacific countries to Port Moresby for the 2nd Community of Practice Conference on Social Protection in the Pacific.

Led by the Government of Papua New Guinea, the conference is bringing countries together to share practical ideas and learn from each other’s experience supporting vulnerable communities across the region.

The World Bank is proud to support the event alongside partners including the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Minister Peter Welcomes Pacific Delegates, Opens CoP Conference

12 May 2026

On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, Minister for Youth, Religion and Community Development, Hon. Jason Peter, has officially welcomed delegates from 12 Pacific countries to Papua New Guinea.

The delegates are in Port Moresby to attend the 2nd Community of Practice Conference on Social Protection in the Pacific.

The event commenced with a welcome dinner held at the Hilton Hotel yesterday, where Minister Peter warmly received and officially welcomed the participants.

In opening the three-day conference today, Minister Peter said PNG is honoured to host representatives and practitioners from across the Pacific region.

“This Community of Practice for social protection provides an important platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, experiences, and practical lessons.

“Through peer learning, collaboration, and open dialogue, we can identify practical approaches to better support and protect the vulnerable and marginalised members of our societies,” he said.

He emphasised that social protection is more than just a policy discussion, noting that it is about protecting lives, preserving dignity, and building resilience for people across the region.

Minister Peter encouraged all participants to engage openly, share generously, and actively contribute to the discussions throughout the conference.

He also thanked the SP-CoP team, the World Bank, the Australian Government, and other key partners for their support in hosting the regional event.

The conference aims to strengthen regional collaboration and promote the exchange of ideas to better support vulnerable populations across the Pacific.

The meeting is expected to conclude this Thursday.
