Held from 17โ€“21 August 2026, the training brought together Geological Survey technical and scientific officers for a combination of classroom-based sessions and practical field exercises focused on modelling, geological and geospatial data collection, monitoring techniques, and equipment installation.

The programme also brought together regional and national stakeholders, including representatives from the Pacific-Community-SPC Georesources and Energy Programme, the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICT) Landslide Working Group, the Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazards Management from Papua New Guinea, representatives from Vanuatu, as well as officials from the Fiji Meteorological Service.

The diverse participation strengthened regional technical exchange and inter-agency coordination, supporting a more coordinated approach to landslide risk management, monitoring and preparedness across Fiji and the wider Pacific.

A key component of the programme was the ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป at Mission Hill, Dilkusha in the Central Division. The pilot station provided MRD officers with practical experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and interpretation of modern landslide monitoring equipment and data, while serving as a demonstration site for future monitoring initiatives in Fiji.

The training forms part of the ongoing technical collaboration between Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which commenced in 2023 under the Landslide Disaster Assistance Team (LDAT) and related technical cooperation initiatives.

As Fiji remains vulnerable to landslides associated with intense rainfall, steep terrain, geological conditions, land-use changes and extreme weather events, strengthened geohazard monitoring capability remains critical to protecting lives, infrastructure and communities.

The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, through the ๐— ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ (๐— ๐—ฅ๐——), is strengthening Fijiโ€™s in-country geological capabilities through specialised training in petrography and thin section production, facilitated by technical specialists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Held this week from 25โ€“28 August 2026, the training brings together 15 MRD officers, representatives from the Pacific-Community-SPC Georesources and Energy Programme, and the The University of the South Pacific.

The programme combines classroom-based learning with practical laboratory sessions, providing participants with hands-on experience in geological thin section preparation, petrographic microscopy, optical mineralogy, and the identification and interpretation of rocks and minerals.

So what is Petrography?

Petrographic analysis is an important component of geological investigations, supporting geological mapping, mineral exploration, resource assessment, research and geotechnical work. Through the preparation and examination of thin sections, geologists can study the mineral composition, texture and characteristics of rocks at microscopic level, providing valuable information for geological interpretation.

Participants are undertaking the complete thin section production process, including sample cutting, billet preparation, polishing, mounting, grinding, cover slip application and petrographic analysis, while also gaining knowledge on the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

The programme further demonstrates the value of collaboration between Government, regional organisations and academic institutions. The participation of SPC and USP strengthens technical knowledge-sharing and provides an opportunity to build professional capacity within Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
