Meeting with Ambassador Fritz

On May 25, Mr. and Mrs. Ambassador Kagomiya welcomed the FSM Ambassador to Japan, Mr. John Fritz, and his wife Ms. Momoe Fritz, who have been temporarily visiting the FSM for business.

Both ambassadors, taking account of the 40th anniversary of the FSM’s independence this year and the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the FSM in 2028, discussed the friendly relations and further cooperation between the two countries.

Ambassador Kagomiya sincerely hopes to contribute further to strengthening the relations between Japan and the FSM.

5月25日、籠宮大使夫妻は、公用でミクロネシア連邦（FSM）に一時帰国中のジョン・フリッツ駐日ＦＳＭ大使及び百恵夫人と面会し、歓迎しました。

両大使は、今年がFSM独立40周年であることや、2028年が日本とFSMの外交関係樹立40周年であることも考慮し、両国の友好的な関係やさらなる協力について議論しました。

籠宮大使は、日本とFSMの関係強化にさらに貢献することを心より願っています。

Postpartum Family Planning Training Workshop

On May 22, Ambassador Kagomiya attended the completion ceremony of the Postpartum Family Planning Training Workshop, which was held for five days from May 18 to May 22 as part of the "Project for Strengthening Maternal and Child Health Services at Primary Healthcare Facilities" implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) with the financial support from Japan.

This project aims to reduce the maternal mortality rate in the FSM by improving medical facilities and strengthening the capacity of healthcare professionals. In this training, 19 midwives, doctors, and maternity staff from all the four states received training on providing counseling for postpartum family planning to women who have recently given birth and on how to use contraceptives to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Ambassador Kagomiya expressed his respect for the participants of the training, stating that their dedication would lead to the success for this project. The Ambassador added that Japan would continue to support improvements to maternal and child health in the FSM.

UNFPA産後家族計画研修の修了式への出席

5月22日、籠宮大使は、日本の支援を受けて国連人口基金（UNFPA）がミクロネシア連邦（FSM）で実施する「一次医療機関における妊産婦保健医療サービス強化計画」の一環として5月18日～5月22日の5日間にわたって行われた産後家族計画研修の修了式に出席しました。

このプロジェクトは、医療機関の施設改善や医療従事者の能力強化によりFSMの妊産婦死亡率の削減を目指すもので、本研修では全4州の19名の助産師や医師、産科医療スタッフに対し、産後まもない女性に対する産後家族計画についてのカウンセリングの提供や望まない妊娠を避けるための避妊具の使い方等の研修が行われました。

籠宮大使は、研修の参加者に対し、みなさんの献身的な姿勢がこのプロジェクトを成功に導くと敬意を表し、FSMの母子保健の向上のため、引き続き支援していくと述べました。

Attendance at Graduation Ceremonies

Ambassador Kagomiya attended the graduation ceremonies of Nanpei Memorial High School on May 27 and Pohnpei Catholic School on May 28. In addition, Embassy staff, on behalf of the Ambassador, attended the graduation ceremonies of the College of Micronesia–FSM on May 15 and Saladak Elementary School on May 25.

The Ambassador and the Embassy extends our heartfelt congratulations to the graduates who, through sustained effort in their studies, have reached this important milestone and embarks on a new chapter of their lives.

The Ambassador sincerely wishes the youth who will shape the future of the Federated States of Micronesia every success and happiness.

卒業生たちが、勉学の努力を重ねた上、人生の大きな節目でありまた新たな門出でもある卒業式を迎えられたことをお祝い申し上げます。

Ambassador of Ireland visits Ambassador Kagomiya

On May 27, Ambassador Kagomiya received a courtesy call from Her Excellency Emma HICKEY, Ambassador of Ireland, newly accredited to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Ambassador HICKEY is a non-resident Ambassador with residence in Manila, Philippines.

The Ambassadors discussed the friendly bilateral relations between Japan and Ireland, and the friendly relations between their own countries and the FSM. They also discussed the economy and development cooperation, and how Japan and Ireland can cooperate with each other and with the FSM.

Furthermore, on May 26, Ambassador Kagomiya and the diplomatic corps attended the Presentation of Credential Ceremony for H.E. Emma HICKEY, who presented her Credentials to His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the FSM.

Ambassador of Belgium visits Ambassador Kagomiya

On May 19, Ambassador Kagomiya received a courtesy call from Her Excellency Vladislava IORDANOVA, Ambassador of Belgium, newly accredited to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Ambassador IORDANOVA is a non-resident Ambassador with residence in Manila, Philippines.

The Ambassadors discussed the friendly relations between their own countries and the FSM. They also discussed the economy and development cooperation, and how Japan and Belgium can cooperate with each other and with the FSM.

Waste Management Survey Event by JAA

On April 25, Ambassador Kagomiya participated in a waste management survey event organized by the JICA Alumni Association (JAA).

The event was attended by many participants, including high school students from Pohnpei and members of the JAA. Participants were divided into five groups and conducted a clean-up activity along the 1.6 km (1 mi) road known as the “Dekehtik Causeway,” gaining a deeper understanding of the serious waste management challenges faced by Pohnpei State. In addition, a workshop was conducted by Mr. Norton Dimitry Santos of the Pohnpei State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where participants learned about proper waste segregation as well as the importance of the 3Rs: recycling, reusing, and reducing waste.

Ambassador Kagomiya expressed his sincere appreciation to the JAA for organizing the event. He also addressed the participating high school students, encouraging them to further deepen their understanding of waste management and expressing his expectation that they will continue to contribute to the protection of Micronesia’s beautiful and rich natural environment.

JAAによる廃棄物調査イベント

4月25日、籠宮大使は、JICA研修員同窓会（JICA Alumni Association：JAA）主催の廃棄物調査イベントに参加しました。

本イベントには、ポンペイ州内の高校生やJICA研修員同窓会のメンバーをはじめ、多くの方々が参加しました。参加者は、「ディケティク・コーズウェイ」と呼ばれる全長約1.6kmの道路において、5つのグループに分かれて清掃活動を行い、ゴミ拾いを通じてポンペイ州が直面する深刻な廃棄物問題への理解を深めました。また、ポンペイ州環境保護局（EPA）のノートン・ディミトリー・サントス氏による、ごみの分別方法やリサイクル・リユース・リデュース（3R）の重要性に関するワークショップも実施されました。

籠宮大使は、本イベントを企画したJICA研修員同窓会に対し謝意を表するとともに、参加した高校生に対し、廃棄物処理に関する理解を一層深め、ミクロネシアの美しく豊かな環境を守っていくことへの期待を述べました。

【Introducing Japanese Culture】 “Children’s Day” 🎏

Children’s Day is a public holiday that celebrates children’s happiness and healthy growth on May 5 in Japan. Originating from Tango no Sekku (the Boy’s Festival)—once observed mainly for boys—it is now a day for all children. Families raise koinobori (carp streamers), display Yoroi-kabuto (samurai warrior armors and helmets), take soothing iris leaves baths, and enjoy seasonal treats such as kashiwa mochi (rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves) and chimaki (rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves). The carp swimming upstream symbolizes strength and growth, while oak leaves represent family prosperity. The ornament is on display at the Embassy lobby; we warmly invite you to visit.

【日本文化紹介】「こどもの日」🎏

こどもの日（5月5日）は、子どもの幸せと健やかな成長を願う祝日です。端午の節句に由来し、かつては男の子の行事でしたが、現在はすべての子どもを祝う日となっています。
家庭では鯉のぼりを揚げ、鎧兜や五月人形を飾り、菖蒲湯に入り、柏餅やちまきを楽しみます。流れに逆らって泳ぐ鯉は強さと成長の象徴、柏の葉は家族の繁栄の象徴とされています。
大使館ロビーでは鎧飾りを展示しております。ぜひお立ち寄りください。

Handover Ceremony for the FSM State Legislature Website Project

On April 21, Ambassador Kagomiya attended the handover ceremony for the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) State Legislature Website Project, which is part of the Strengthening Legislatures’ Capacity in Pacific Islands Countries Phase Ⅱ (SLIP2) project implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the financial support from Japan.

This project supports the State Legislatures of the FSM and the National Congress of Palau in strengthening citizen participation and access to information through the creation of new websites.

Ambassador Kagomiya expressed his sincere appreciation to the UNDP for its continued support, stating that Japan shares common values including democracy, rule of law, human rights, and maritime security with the Pacific Island Countries and continue to support these countries.

Ms. Gulbahor Nematova, Deputy Resident Representative for the North Pacific Office of the UNDP and Mr. Douglas Marar, Chief of Staff for the Chuuk State Legislature, stated the importance of digital access to the legislature and expressed gratitude for Japan's support.

At the end of the ceremony, as part of the effort to promote Japanese cuisine, Japanese sweets made with “matcha” and “mochi” by the embassy's chef were served, and participants enjoyed the Japanese sweets.

ミクロネシア連邦州議会へのウェブサイトの引渡式

4月21日、籠宮大使は、日本の支援を受けて国連開発計画（UNDP）が「太平洋島嶼国における議会能力強化フェーズⅡ（SLIP2）」プロジェクトの一環としてミクロネシア連邦（FSM）で実施しているFSM州議会ウェブサイトプロジェクトの引渡式に出席しました。

このプロジェクトは、FSM州議会とパラオ国議会に対し、新たなウェブサイトの作成を通じた市民の参加と情報へのアクセスの強化を支援するものです。

籠宮大使は、UNDPの継続的な支援に対し心からの感謝を表明し、日本は民主主義、法の支配、人権、海洋安全保障といった共通の価値観を太平洋島嶼国と共有しており、これらの国々を引き続き支援していくと述べました。

UNDP北太平洋事務所のグルバホル・ネマトバ副代表やチューク州議会のダグラス・マラール官房長からは、議会へのデジタルアクセスの重要性を述べるとともに、日本の支援に感謝の意が表されました。

式典の最後には、日本食の普及活動の一環として、在外公館料理人が「抹茶」と「餅」を使った和菓子等を提供し、参加者は舌鼓を打ちました。
