| Pacific Ministers champion ocean and fisheries priorities

With strong fisheries representation at COP30, FFC Ministers Chair and Niue Minister for Natural Resources Hon. Mona Ainuu delivered a statement on behalf of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) during the Special Session on the Outcome of the Oceans and Climate Change Dialogue.

🗣 “For Pacific SIDS, healthy marine ecosystems – underpinned by sustainable fisheries – are critical to livelihoods and economies, and integral to ensuring a healthy ocean.”

🤝 Also pictured (insert) is the FFC Chair and Hon. Elina Akinaga, Secretary for Resources and Development, Federated States of Micronesia, at COP30 currently underway in Belém, Brazil.

Yap's Future is Looking Bright! 🌴

We're thrilled to report that the Micronesia Challenge Strategic Action Plan (SAP) 2030 consultations in Yap were a resounding success! 🎉
On October 30th & October 31st community members, government representatives, and partners came together to share vital local knowledge and perspectives, helping to shape the actions we'll take to meet the ambitious Micronesia Challenge 2030 goals: effectively managing 50% of marine resources and 30% of terrestrial resources across Micronesia.
The input from Yap is crucial for ensuring the final plan truly reflects the unique needs and traditions of our island, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable future for our natural resources and communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated and to our dedicated team for leading these important discussions:

ISA and its Member States are finalizing a comprehensive Mining Code, the legal framework governing any potential resource activities, to ensure transparency, inclusivity, sustainability, accountability and benefit sharing for our future generations.


Its commercial arm, the Enterprise, will enable direct participation of humankind in any future mineral activities, ensuring profits and benefits are shared equitably, particularly with developing States.

The 8th Meeting of the RTMCFA, happening this week in Noumea, New Caledonia, is discussing and addressing some of the main technical issues affecting coastal fisheries and aquaculture in support of better evidence-based resource management, the equitable access to resources, and to enhance the sustainable development of aquaculture and nearshore livelihoods. Representing FSM is Dave Mathias, Conservation Management Specialist for FSM R&D and Mr. Okean Ehmes, WB PROPER Coordinator.

Information on the 8th Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture (RTMCFA8) happening in Noumea, New Caledonia this week!

The 1st meeting of the Subsidiary Body (SB) on Article 8J and other provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities kicked off today at the Atlapa Convention Center in Panama City, Panama. The SB8J was established by a decision of the 16th meeting of the Conference of Parties in Cali, Columbia in 2024. The mandate of the SB8J is to provide advice to the COP and other Subsidiary Bodies on matters of relevance to indigenous peoples and local communities that are within the scope of the Convention and its Protocols. Among the discussions that will take place at this meeting are 1.) strategies for mobilizing resources to ensure the availability of and access to financial resources and funding, as well as other means of implementation; 2.) modus operandi of the SB8J; 3.) implementation of the program of work for SB8J; 4.) provision of advice on traditional knowledge for the global report on collective progress in the implementation of the KMGBF; and 5.) recommendations of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. FSM is represented at this meeting by the Assistant Secretary for Marine Resources, Mrs. Camille Inatio, and Legal Advisor to the FSM UN Mission, Mr. Clement Yow Mulalap.
