Sa première tour fut érigée au XIIe siècle pour défendre la cathédrale de Dol et l’indépendance de la Bretagne. Résidence privée depuis ses origines, le château a aussi été hôpital mil
itaire, école de village… et, selon la légende, demeure de Lancelot, le chevalier breton. Il veille sur le mystérieux lac Viviane, dit "Dame du Lac", aux portes de la forêt de Brocéliande. Il y puise l’inspiration de ses Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe, faisant du château le symbole littéraire du romantisme français. Le parc, redessiné au XIXe siècle par Denis Bühler selon ses écrits, est classé parmi les Parcs et Jardins de Bretagne. Abandonné pendant près d’un siècle, le château est restauré dès 1876 par le petit-neveu de l’écrivain, sous la direction d’Ernest Trilhe, élève de Viollet-le-Duc dans le style Neo Gothique. Aujourd’hui encore, il appartient à la même famille depuis sa construction.

🏰 Welcome to the Château de Combourg
Cradle of French Romanticism and a jewel of Brittany's heritage, the Château de Combourg opens its doors to history, legends, and literature. Its first tower was built in the 12th century to defend the cathedral of Dol and the independence of Brittany. A private residence since its origins, the castle has also served as a military hospital, a village school… and, according to legend, the home of Lancelot, the Breton knight. It overlooks the mysterious Lake Viviane, known as the “Lady of the Lake,” on the edge of the Brocéliande forest. In the 18th century, young François-René de Chateaubriand spent his childhood here. He drew inspiration from it for his Memoirs from Beyond the Grave, making the château a literary symbol of French Romanticism. The park, redesigned in the 19th century by Denis Bühler based on his writings, is listed among the Parks and Gardens of Brittany. Abandoned for nearly a century, the castle was restored starting in 1876 by the writer’s great-nephew, under the direction of Ernest Trilhe, a student of Viollet-le-Duc, in Neo-Gothic style. Today, it is still owned by the same family since its construction.
