The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. Just as his father had done before him, Ludwig wanted to build a splendid new castle upon the ruins of another. His new project was known as the “New Castle Hohenschwangau”. Only later, when the castle was opened to the public on August 1, 1886, just weeks after Ludwig’s death, did the edifice come to be known as “new swan stone”.

Located at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, the royal Château de Chambord is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its very distinctive French Renaissance architecture.
It is the biggest château in the Loire Valley, with 440 rooms, 800 carved capitals and 282 fireplaces!
The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King Francis I of France. It was built to serve as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who maintained his royal residences at the châteaux of Blois and Amboise. It was designed by the architect Domenico da Cortona and the construction began in 1519.
Now, Château de Chambord is the state property and a major tourist attraction, and around 700000 people visit the château by year.
