Romania at UNESCO

Sunt onorată și recunoscătoare Grupului MediaUno - creator al Anuarului “Movers&Shakers” - pentru includerea mea în secțiunea „Inspirational Leaders”.

Primesc această recunoaştere cu emoție, dar mai ales cu sentimentul responsabilității pe care îl poartă un asemenea cuvânt: inspirație.

Pentru mine, adevărata măsură a unui parcurs profesional nu stă doar în funcțiile sau reușitele sale, ci în punțile pe care reușim să le construim între oameni, culturi și idei și în încrederea pe care o lăsăm în urmă.

Mă bucur cu atât mai mult că reflecțiile mele din această publicație sunt dedicate unei teme în care cred profund: forța culturii și a artei de a deveni limbaje ale diplomației, ale dialogului și ale păcii.

După mai bine de 35 de ani de diplomație, rămân convinsă că diferențele nu trebuie să devină ziduri — ele pot deveni punți.

Mulțumesc, MediaUno, pentru acest gest și pentru generozitatea de a aduce în lumină oameni, idei și parcursuri care încearcă să lase ceva bun în urma lor.

Inspirația este, până la urmă, o formă de responsabilitate față de ceilalți.

The World Heritage Committee wrapped up its 48th session in Busan, Republic of Korea, with the addition of 25 new sites to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

All inscriptions during the session were adopted by consensus, reflecting the cooperative spirit that underpins the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

This session also marks the first-ever inscriptions on the UNESCO World Heritage List for three African countries - Comoros, São Tomé and Príncipe and South Sudan - showcasing the Organization’s commitment to a more balanced and representative List.

The Committee also added six sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger, recognizing both the sites’ outstanding value and the need to protect them.

Congratulations to all the countries and communities on the inscription of new UNESCO World Heritage sites, and to all participants for a successful session!

At the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Busan, Republic of Korea, I was honored to speak on behalf of my country about a principle we deeply believe in: when a site is inscribed on the World Heritage List, it is not the end of the journey—it is the beginning of a responsibility we all share.

Protecting Outstanding Universal Value means more than preserving a place on paper. It means strong management, constant monitoring, real engagement with local communities, and the kind of international cooperation that reminds us heritage belongs to everyone. The credibility of the World Heritage Convention depends not only on recognizing exceptional places, but on our commitment to protect them for future generations.

I was glad to express Romania’s warm congrats addressed to the leadership and team of the World Heritage Center, and voice our support for stronger post-inscription assistance, practical guidance for States Parties, and predictable funding to help safeguard our shared heritage.

We also reaffirmed our readiness to share our own experience and to learn from others, because heritage protection is something we can only achieve together.

I concluded my statement with this thought, that I consider the essence of our work in this area:

“Every heritage site tells a story, not only of where we come from, but of who we aspire to become.”
