Join us for “Coastal Horizons: Pathways and Actions to Strengthen Resilience to Coastal Hazards”, a side event being held during the 57th Session of the IOC Executive Council. 🌊

This event will highlight progress, foster discussions and strategise actionable measures to tackle Ocean Decade Challenge 6, focusing on increasing coastal resilience to hazards including tsunamis, sea level rise and storm surges. Led by Denis Chang Seng from UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Resilience Section, the session will feature key topics from endorsed actions and invited speakers, including insights from the Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP).

Don't miss this opportunity to engage with experts, discuss key challenges and explore new actions. The event will be followed by a light cocktail reception to network and foster collaborations.

🚨📢 Countdown to the CoastWAVE Phase 1 Project Closure Meeting in Alexandria, Egypt! 🏛️

We're just three days away from kicking off an incredible event in Alexandria! 🎉 The UNESCO-IOC DG ECHO CoastWAVE Phase 1 Project Closure Meeting and Tsunami Recognition Ceremony for Alexandria are taking place from 25 – 29 May.

Excitement is building as we come together to celebrate the project’s achievements and to look ahead to the next phase.

IMPORTANT AGENDA UPDATE: Alexandria’s Tsunami Ready Recognition Ceremony will now take place 1.30 - 5PM on 25 May.

Prof. Amr Zakaria Hamouda, President of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF) was elected as the New Officer to the Commission for Group V (Africa)!

The 32nd IOC Assembly, held from June 21–30, 2023, at Headquarters Paris, was a significant event that witnessed the election of new Officers and members of the Commission. Among the key highlights were the appointment of Dr. Yutaka Michida, from the University of Tokyo, Japan, as the newly elected IOC/UNESCO Chairperson for the 2023-2025 biennium; and the election of the five Vice-Chairpersons of the Commission.

Launch of the NEAMTWS 2030 Strategy and Tsunami Ready Posters. A ceremony took place on 12 April 2023 to launch the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the North-eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, and connected seas Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/NEAMTWS) 2030 Strategy (Technical Series and Brochure); and two new Tsunami Ready and Coastal Hazard Ready Posters. The ceremony was organized during the ICG/NEAMTWS Steering Committee meeting, 12-13 April at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France with the participation of the ICG/NEAMTWS Steering Committee Members and Permanent Delegates to UNESCO from France, Italy, Portugal, and Türkiye (NEAMTWS Tsunami Service Provider countries).

The launch ceremony aimed to raise visibility and awareness of the ICG/NEAMTWS 2030 Strategy, share and promote the work and activities including the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme of the ICG/NEAMTWS and the Tsunami Resilience Section; and strengthen connections and cooperation with NEAM UNESCO Permanent Delegations.

El Jadida-One Step Closer to Become ‘Tsunami Ready’. The University of Chouaib Doukkali (UCD), one of the 8 national partners of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) EU DG ECHO CoastWAVE project, organized a meeting on Tsunami Ready with high-level stakeholders in El Jadida, Morocco on March 11, 2023. The CoastWAVE project seeks to build resilient communities through awareness and preparedness strategies that will protect life, livelihoods, and property from tsunamis in different regions. Participants discussed a range of issues, including the need for more investment in tsunami alerting systems and integration of tsunami Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) into the National Emergency Response Plans as well as the importance of raising public awareness about tsunami risks.
