“Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath, Varanasi” becomes India’s 45th
site at and now inscribed on the List, marking India’s 45th World Heritage property.
Amb/PR of India to UNESCO, Shri Vishal V Sharma while thanking the World Heritage Centre thanked Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Culture, and the ASI. He said, “Sarnath remains a site of reflection for over 500 million Buddhists worldwide and inspires the youth to seek truth, embrace non-violence, pursue mindful living, and become responsible global citizens committed to inclusive social transformation that resonate deeply with India and UNESCO's own mission of building peace.”
India now has 45 UNESCO World Heritage properties, comprising 37 Cultural, 7 Natural and 1 Mixed site, reflecting our country’s rich and diverse heritage.
