We asked the delegates from the Swedish delegation what their highlight from the Committee Meeting was
– follow the slides to see what they said! 👀

Last week (17–20 February), Sweden took part in its first Committee Meeting following the 2025 election under UNESCO’s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. 🎨

The Team-Sweden delegation was led by Director-General Kajsa Ravin from the Swedish Arts Council and included representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the Swedish Arts Council, the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO, and Sweden’s Delegation to UNESCO. 🇸🇪🇺🇳

Kajsa had the honor of opening the ceremony for the launch of the Reshaping|Report, which Sweden has supported.🚀

Creators face projected global revenue losses of up to 24% by 2028, new UNESCO report shows.

just launched its Re|Shaping report, a global monitoring report with data from over 120 countries, pointing out the need for stronger policies to protect creators from widening inequalities.

The report is published with the support of Sweden.

Some highlights from the report:

📌 Cultural and creative industries are increasingly recognized as drivers of economic growth, social cohesion and sustainable development - but the systems supporting them remain fragile and uneven.
📌 Growing concerns over artistic freedom and the safety of creators.
📌 Support mechanisms for artists at risk remain fragmented and under-resourced
📌 Digital revenues now represent 35% of creators’ income, up from 17% in 2018, marking a structural shift accompanied by income instability and increased exposure to intellectual property infringements.

🇸🇪🇺🇳 Sweden in the Global Effort Against Racism and Discrimination

On December 10, Deputy Equality Ombudsman Samuel Engblom participated in the Consultation Meeting on the Global Alliance against Racism and Discrimination at UNESCO in Paris.

The Equality Ombudsman (DO) is an independent government agency tasked with monitoring compliance with the Discrimination Act and promoting equal rights and opportunities for all.

DO has established collaborations within Europe with other anti-discrimination bodies but also seeks knowledge globally. This includes, for example, the rights of Indigenous peoples, where experiences from Latin America are valuable, as well as equality data—methods for measuring and understanding the prevalence of discrimination. The visit to is part of the Network of Anti-Racism and Anti-Discrimination Officials, a network that DO helped initiate two years ago. The network brings together institutions from several continents to exchange experiences and strengthen efforts against racism and discrimination.

UNESCO plays a central role through its expertise and established partnerships. As Samuel Engblom puts it: “UNESCO possesses knowledge about racism—knowledge that Sweden can benefit from”. The organization has long-standing experience in combating racism and holds expertise that is crucial for developing strategies against discrimination. Global cooperation provides opportunities to exchange methods and experiences – from equality data and Indigenous issues to effective ways of investigating complaints.

Sweden, in turn, can contribute expertise on resource-efficient investigations and share good examples through best practices. Through collaboration with UNESCO, Sweden gains access to knowledge on Indigenous peoples, equality data, and new strategies, while its work is enriched by international experience.

This week, added the Stairs in , , on its list of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection – the highest legal protection for cultural property.

The Primorsky Stairs are one of the most prominent landmarks of the city of Odesa and a world-famous landmark. Its cultural significance has been continuously affirmed across literature, performing arts, cinema and collective memory for more than a century. The stairs served as a filming location for the film the BattleshipPotemkin by Sergei Eisenstein. Today, the stairs are an important venue for mass cultural and social events.

🌍🗳️ El-Enany – Elected as the New Director-General of UNESCO

Today, the 6th of November 2025, the Egyptian candidate Khaled El-Enany was officially elected as the new Director-General of UNESCO during the organization’s General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The appointment of Egypt’s former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities marks a historic moment as he’s the first Director General from
an Arab country, and the second one from the continent of Africa.

We congratulate Mr El-Enany and look forward to our future cooperation together in strengthening UNESCO’s work to protect and promote human rights across its mandate.
