🔹In this episode, Paola Subacchi is joined by Nicolas Niarchos to explore the growing global race for critical metals, especially those powering the batteries behind our digital and green transitions. They unpack the supply chains at the core of modern life and ask a tough question: are richer economies simply exporting pollution to poorer countries? Focusing on metal-rich nations, they examine how years of neglect, state fragility, and predatory lending have left these countries unable to turn resource wealth into sustainable development – and what it would take to change that.

👤Nicolas Niarchos is a journalist whose work focuses on energy, war, and migration. He is the editor and co-founder of Now Voyager, a new magazine of international affairs. He has been a contributing writer at the New Yorker since 2014, and his reporting has also appeared in the Nation, the New York Times, and the Guardian. He is the author of The Elements of Power: A Story of War, Technology, and the Dirtiest Supply Chain on Earth.

👤Paola Subacchi is Professor and Chair in Sovereign Debt and Finance at Sciences Po, and Professor of Political Economy of Europe at the University of Bologna. She is also a partner at Essential Economics, a London-based consultancy that advises governments, international organisations, and private companies.

🔴 PSIA Event | What Next for the Fight Against the Financing of Terrorism?

💸 Join us at PSIA for a side event to the 5th “No Money for Terror” Ministerial Conference. Since its launch in Paris in 2018, the NMFT conference has taken place in Melbourne, New Delhi, and Munich, and is returning to France for a ministerial session on 19 May 2026. The evening before, PSIA at Sciences Po will host an expert panel on the future of the fight against terrorism financing, amid shifts in both the threat and technology landscape. Speakers will explore the financial tradecraft of terrorist groups, the risks of evolving financial technologies, and the importance of international cooperation. Bringing together policymakers, the private sector, and academia, the panel reflects the full diversity of stakeholders in countering the financing of terrorism.

The event will be opened by Olivier Caron, French Special Envoy for Terrorism and Organised Crime, and closed by Claire Cheremetinski, Deputy Head, French Treasury.

The panel discussion will feature:

👤Kamran Ahmad is a Partner in the Energy, Infrastructure and Project Finance Group in London. He has extensive experience with banks, multilaterals, investors, sponsors and project companies across greenfield and brownfield transactions, spanning a broad range of infrastructure sectors and financing structures - including bank debt, project bonds and multi-source financings. Kamran also has deep expertise in energy sector projects, from conventional and renewable power to commodities-based financings.

🔴 PSIA Event | The UN efforts to address the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz

🚢 The Strait of Hormuz has become the world’s most contested maritime corridor. Since tanker traffic ground to a near-standstill, the World Food Programme warns the disruption could push 45 million more people into hunger, as conflict-weakened nations face acute fertiliser shortages ahead of critical agricultural seasons. In response, the UN Secretary-General established a task force to facilitate safe passage of fertilisers for humanitarian purposes, headed by Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of UNOPS, who is designing a one-stop platform to approve and monitor shipments through the Strait, built on what he identifies as the UN’s most critical asset in conflict: the capacity to build trust.

🇺🇸PSIA is honored to welcome the 20th United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, a Sciences Po alumnus, for a keynote speech followed by a discussion with PSIA Dean Arancha González and students.

👤 Ambassador Jamieson Greer was confirmed as the 20th U.S. Trade Representative on February 27, 2025. A key member of President Trump’s cabinet, he prioritizes combating unfair trade practices, expanding market access for American products, and achieving reciprocity in U.S. trading relationships. Greer previously served as Chief of Staff to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer during Trump’s first term, where he played a central role in implementing tariffs on China, negotiating the U.S.-China Phase One Agreement, and securing congressional approval for USMCA. Between government roles, he was a partner at a Washington law firm specializing in international trade and national security. Earlier in his career, he served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps, including a deployment to Iraq. The Ambassador holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia and a joint Master in Global Business Law from Sciences Po and Panthéon-Sorbonne.

🇺🇳PSIA is honored to host Rebeca Grynspan, one of the four declared candidates for Secretary‑General of the United Nations, who will engage directly with PSIA students.

👤Rebeca Grynspan, an economist and former Vice President of Costa Rica, is an experienced leader of international institutions with a substantive track record in government, UN diplomacy, economic policy and multilateral cooperation at the global level. In September 2021, she was appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), becoming the first woman to lead the organization. Prior to joining the UN, she was Vice President of Costa Rica and held cabinet positions as Minister of Housing, Minister Coordinator of Economic and Social Affairs and Deputy Finance Minister. Previously, she served as Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Conference (2014–2021), chairing regional summits of Heads of State and Government; United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); and UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. She was a member of the UN Commission for the Reconstruction of Haiti, representing the UN Secretary-General.
