Building on the momentum of the recently concluded partnership between Tennis Kenya, the French Tennis Federation and the City of Istres, the Deputy Head of Mission, Amb. Jane Lusenaka, held a bilateral meeting with the Mayor of Istres, Vice-President of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, Robin Prétot on 13th July 2026 in Istres to discuss new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in sports and culture.

The discussions explored youth exchange programmes, talent and skills development, cultural collaborations and strengthening people to people ties amongst others. The Deputy Head of Mission reaffirmed the Mission’s and Kenya’s commitment to work together with the city of Istres towards strengthened partnerships and cooperation on sports and cultural diplomacy and other future areas of collaboration.

In attendance was the Deputy Mayor in charge of sports, Pascal Delon, and other officials. Also present in the meeting was the First Secretary, Ms. Lynette Lokuruka, Kenya’s Common Wealth Sprinter Champion, Ferdinand Omanyala and Mr. Daniel Chirchir.

The Embassy was delighted to host the official delegation to the 9th World Congress against the Death Penalty 2026 in Paris, dated 30th June to 2nd July.

The delegation comprised Hon. Millie Odhiambo-Mabona, Justice Isaac Lenaola, and Claris Ogangah, the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission. The Attorney General, Hon. Dorcas Oduor, is the head of the delegation who later joined the team.

The objectives of the Congress, themed ‘Together Against the Death Penalty’, were to encourage concrete progress and commitment; stakeholder cooperation; raise awareness of the realities; fight discrimination; prevent resurgence; and protect fundamental rights.

Abolishing death penalty upholds the respect for plurality, dialogue, human rights, and durable solutions/justice.

On the margins of the G7 Leaders’ Summit, I held discussions with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman on opportunities to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

We explored potential collaboration through establishing Nairobi as the home of the first OpenAI Academy initiative in Eastern Africa, expanding AI education, strengthening digital skills, supporting educators and learners, and reinforcing Kenya’s position as a leading hub for AI talent and innovation.

I underscored the importance of harnessing emerging technologies to create opportunities for young people, drive innovation and ensure Africa plays a meaningful role in shaping the future digital economy.
