The 3rd Joint IHO-IALA Workshop on S-100/S-200 Development and Portrayal Opens in Istanbul!
This morning IALA, IHO and the Directorate General of Coastal Safety of Türkiye are hosting the 3rd Joint IHO-IALA Workshop on S-100/S-200 Development and Portrayal in Istanbul, Türkiye, from 1 to 4 September 2026.
The workshop brings together experts from hydrographic offices, Marine Aids to Navigation authorities, maritime administrations, international organisations, industry and academia to advance the development and implementation of S-100 and S-200 framework standards and products. More than 70 participants from across the maritime community are taking part.
The programme includes presentations on the alignment of international standards, operational implementation, secure data exchange, data quality and validation, practical use cases and lessons learned from implementation activities.
The workshop provides an important opportunity for IALA, IHO and stakeholders to strengthen cooperation and support the delivery of interoperable digital maritime services that contribute to safer, more efficient and more sustainable navigation.

Registration is now open for the IALA Workshop on VDES Satellite!
IALA, in association with the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and the Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Workshop on VDES Satellite, taking place in Tokyo, Japan, from 10 to 13 November 2026.
Discussions will focus on:
• developing guidance for IALA Members on the future use of VDES Satellite;
• contributing to a practical user manual;
• formulating IALA’s position for consideration by IMO and ITU;
• identifying operational requirements for AtoN, VTS and other maritime communication services;
• addressing technical, regulatory and operational challenges; and
• exploring future collaboration to support global implementation.
This will be an important opportunity for service providers, users and stakeholders to exchange views and help shape the future of maritime digital communications.

The World-Wide Academy successfully delivered two Level 1.1 AtoN Manager training sessions (module 3) simultaneously, between 6 and 10 July.
One session was conducted jointly with the training organization BP2TL in Jakarta, Indonesia, for the benefit of 25 participants from the Direction General of Sea Transportation (DGST); the implementation, among other things, of the Memorandum of Understanding between DGST and IALA renewed last November 2025.
Another session was delivered for the fourth time in Cartagena de Indias, Columbia, jointly with ENAP for 14 participants from the Direccion general Maritima (DIMAR) and sponsored participants from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and El Salvador.
Two sessions on two continents for great cooperation and shared commitment.

At the World Marine Aids to Navigation Day Main Event 2026, organised by the Republic of Korea on 15 July, IALA is pleased to highlight the role of lighthouse heritage in connecting maritime safety, cultural value and international cooperation.
During the official ceremony in Busan, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea and IALA signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen maritime safety cooperation through the IALA-M*F Cooperation Programme Fund.
The ceremony also recognised the importance of lighthouse preservation and public value, including through national government awards dedicated to safeguarding lighthouse heritage for future generations.
A special moment marked the celebration of Evangelistas Lighthouse, Chile, selected as the IALA Heritage Lighthouse of the Year 2026. The IALA Secretary-General presented a commemorative plaque prepared by the Republic of Korea to Chile’s representative, recognising the lighthouse’s outstanding heritage significance and contribution to maritime safety.
This celebration reflects IALA’s continued commitment to promoting the preservation, appreciation and sustainable management of marine aids to navigation heritage worldwide.

Today in London, the Secretary-General of IALA and the Chief Executive of the Nautical Institute (NI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming the strong partnership between our organizations.
We are grateful for the Nautical Institute’s continued support of IALA’s work to enhance the safety of navigation worldwide. We look forward to building on this collaboration in the years ahead.

On Friday 3 July, the IALA World-Wide Academy (WWA) successfully concluded the second IALA Level 1.2 Master of Marine Aids to Navigation (AtoN) Management Course of 2026, hosted by the Korea Institute of Aids to Navigation (K-AtoN) in Busan, Republic of Korea, with the invaluable support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (M*F). Held from 29 June to 3 July 2026, the course focused on strengthening strategic leadership and governance for Marine Aids to Navigation services.
The programme was successfully completed by 14 participants representing Colombia, Indonesia, Iraq, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tunisia, and Vietnam. The IALA World-Wide Academy (WWA) is particularly pleased that 7 of the 14 participants were sponsored by the Academy, reaffirming its commitment to building global capacity and strengthening expertise in Marine Aids to Navigation.
The IALA WWA extends its sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (M*F) for its generous support, the Korea Institute of Aids to Navigation (K-AtoN) for its outstanding hosting and organization, and the WWA consultants and lecturing team for their professionalism, dedication, and valuable contributions throughout the programme.
Congratulations to all the graduates on this important achievement. The IALA WWA wishes them every success in applying the knowledge and leadership skills gained during the course to strengthen Marine Aids to Navigation services and contribute to safer and more efficient navigation in their respective countries.
