On this international day, we pay tribute to the victims of discrimination, hostility or violence for freely choosing, changing or leaving a religion or belief, for belonging to a religious community or being perceived as part of one, or for having no religion or belief. We call on all states to act against discrimination and violence based on religion or belief, and to respect, protect and fulfil this human right. This also entails not criminalizing apostasy nor abusing blasphemy laws. So long as discrimination and violence persist, we have a responsibility to engage constructively and keep working actively towards a world where freedom, respect, tolerance and peace for persons of all religions and beliefs are no longer an exception but the norm.

International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

The International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism honours the victims and survivors of terrorism while promoting and protecting their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The 2026 theme “Healing through Memory” recognizes that remembrance is not only about reflecting on the past. By preserving stories, fostering empathy and ensuring recognition of victims and survivors, acts of memory can support long-term healing, strengthen social cohesion and help prevent future violence.
This observance is also a call to action for governments, international organizations, civil society and communities to promote victim-centred approaches that uphold dignity, support recovery and ensure that the voices of victims and survivors continue to be heard.

International Justice Day
On International Justice Day, we reaffirm the vital role of a strong and independent International Justice System in upholding International Law and advancing accountability.
Respect for the rule of law remains essential to building a more peaceful, just and stable world. International law must be upheld by all, everywhere and without distinction.
Portugal remains firmly committed to the principles of the UN Charter and to an international order grounded in justice, equality and the consistent application of international law.

Sabia que há 159 anos, Portugal foi um dos primeiros países do mundo a abolir a pena de morte? Foi precisamente a 1 de julho de 1867 que o Rei D. Luís I assinou a lei que aboliu a pena de morte, tornando Portugal um dos países pioneiros na afirmação dos direitos humanos.

Este marco histórico foi celebrado, na época, pelo escritor francês Victor Hugo como um verdadeiro sinal de progresso.

Esse legado voltou a fazer-se ouvir na Assembleia Nacional, em Paris, onde a Ministra da Justiça, , encerrou o 9.º Congresso Mundial, dia Contra a Pena de Morte, dia 2 julho, e entregou o Prémio Iniciativa Jovem à Abolition Now Tour, distinguindo o papel dos jovens na defesa dos direitos humanos.

Já estão abertas as candidaturas à 32.ª edição do Prémio do Centro Norte-Sul, distinção que reconhece as personalidades, activistas, ou organizações que, pela sua acção excepcional, contribuiram para a defesa e promoção dos direitos humanos, democracia e estado de direito, assim como para reforço diálogo intercultural e da parceria e solidariedade entre o Norte e o Sul.

A Missão Permanente de Portugal recebeu, dia 6 Julho, um grupo de 15 estudantes e 2 professores de São João da Madeira, que visitaram o Conselho da Europa e o Parlamento Europeu.
Ocasião foi propícia para conhecerem o trabalho desta Missão diplomática e o papel fundamental que o Conselho da Europa desempenha na defesa dos nossos valores democráticos, estado direito e direitos humanos.

Como vem sendo tradição, o representante permanente de Portugal junto do Conselho da Europa, Embaixador António Alves Machado, ofereceu ontem, 24 Junho, um jantar de boas-vindas à delegação nacional junto da Assembleia Parlamentar do Conselho da Europa, liderada pela deputada Edite Estrela.

Ocasião proporcionou um convívio agradável, no qual se trocaram ideias sobre celebração do 50.º aniversário da adesão de Portugal ao Conselho da Europa, ocasião marcante para afirmação de Portugal no sistema multilateral internacional e que muito contribuiu para solidificação do sistema democrático no nosso país.
