A Small Amount Can Change Alissia’s Life

Sickle cell disease is a painful and life-threatening condition that affects many children in Kenya. It causes red blood cells to become misshapen, blocking blood flow and leading to severe pain, infection, and, too often, early death.

Recently, we were told about Alissia, the younger sister of Millicent—one of our girls. Just months ago, she was proudly graduating from nursery school. Now, after starting primary school, she is constantly unwell. One image in particular was heartbreaking—her small body weakened after a severe infection her sickle cell disease made far worse.

Her family has no means to pay for treatment.

Right now, her hospital bill stands at 7,800 KES (around £40). Paying this would allow her to receive the care she urgently needs today.

But there is also a longer-term solution.

For less than £10 a month, we can enrol Alissia in medical insurance. This would give her ongoing access to essential treatment, medication, and hospital care—something her family simply cannot afford alone.

We have chosen not to share photographs, in order to protect Alissia’s privacy and dignity.

We cannot help every child. But we can help this one.

Could you help us clear her hospital bill and give her the chance of ongoing care?

Christmas Food Parcel Appeal

As Christmas approaches, I am reminded once again of our local families in Kisumu who face this season with empty pockets and heavy hearts. A few months ago, in celebration of World Food Day, we delivered food parcels to several vulnerable households. The help reached only a small number of families — yet the impact was profound.

It struck me then that, when we ask for support, our donors rarely get to see what these parcels truly mean to the people who receive them.

What we give is simple. But every item is chosen with intention. These are the staples that keep a family going — the meals children know, the ingredients mothers rely on, the nourishment that can stretch for days or even weeks. When a family receives a food parcel, the relief is immediate — but the hope it restores lasts far longer.

For many families, the Christmas season is painful. School meals stop. Food prices rise. Parents struggle to prepare even a single special meal for their children. That is why our Christmas food parcels include items that allow families not only to eat — but to celebrate. A cup of tea shared together. Ingredients for chapati. A simple festive dish that brings a sense of belonging to a day that can otherwise pass in silence.

This year, we hope to reach as many vulnerable households as possible: elderly caregivers, single parents, families affected by drought or unemployment, and children who depend on school meals that disappear over the holiday break.

Our Christmas food parcel will include:

• Chapati flour – many families only make chapatis once or twice a year. This festive treat turns Christmas into something special.
• Rice – a traditional Christmas meal that can feed an entire family.
• Maize flour – for ugali, the heart of the Kenyan table. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without it.
• Cooking oil – a precious, expensive staple. Having oil means meals can be cooked properly and with dignity.
• Tea and sugar – small comforts that bring families and neighbours together.
• Ndengu (green grams) – nutritious, filling, and able to stretch across many meals.
• Fresh vegetables – tomatoes, onions, sukuma, cabbage, potatoes — the ingredients that turn food into a true meal, not just survival.
• A family biscuit pack and fruit juice – small joys that make children feel seen and loved at Christmas.

Why give?

Because for many families, Christmas is not just another day when their children go hungry — it is a painful reminder of what they cannot provide.

Because a food parcel is more than ingredients — it restores dignity, creates belonging, and offers the chance to celebrate like every other family.

Because your support allows parents to sit alongside their children and feel hope instead of fear.

This year, we want to reach elderly caregivers, single parents, and children who depend on school meals that disappear during the holidays.

Your gift says, “You matter. You’re not forgotten.”

If you’re able, please help us place a food parcel into the hands of a family who truly needs it this Christmas. Every donation — large or small — makes a real difference.

Know that 100% of your donation goes directly to providing these food parcels on the ground. With £18 (or €20), you can place a Christmas food parcel directly into the hands of a vulnerable family. No admin costs. No deductions. Just real food reaching real people who need it most. Thank you for standing with us. www.kenyankids.org

Almost two weeks ago, I shared that we wanted to help some needy families in recognition of World Food Day.

It felt only natural to send three of our eldest girls — all of whom grew up in the slums before they came to us — to identify, for themselves, the families most in need.

They found fifteen families, though they could easily have found more. So this weekend, together with Malene and Karoline, our visiting volunteers from Norway, they distributed provisions to each household: bags of maize, rice and sugar; cartons of milk; bread, tea leaves, salt, bar soap and toothpaste — even matches.

For struggling families, these parcels mean more than food — they’re hope, love, and a reminder that they are not forgotten.

Thank you for your donations, which make it possible for us to keep reaching out, even in the hardest of places.

If you’d like to be part of the next delivery, know that every contribution — big or small — continues to make a real difference.

In November, last year, Malene — a newly qualified doctor from Norway — joined us in Kisumu to volunteer with Kenyan Kids.
This year, she’s back — and she hasn’t come alone! Malene has returned with her mum and a good friend, and together they’re rolling up their sleeves to renovate the small maternity unit in our local clinic. It sorely needs it!
We’re so grateful for their generosity, energy, and commitment to improving care for mothers and babies in Holo.
As there project progresses, we shall look forward to posting more photos.
Thank you so much Malene, Lena and Karoline!

Our little school, Arc en Ciel is growing! Today we are celebrating 15 children as they move from kindergarten to Primary 1. Over 80 children are now enrolled across five classes. A big shout out to everyone who’s helped put out school firmly on the map in our local community of Holo. Huge thanks to Sheila Washeke who’s been our mainstay throughout!

In recognition of World Food Day, three of our girls (Esther, Mary Janet, and Melisa) are returning to the Kenyan slums where they once lived - not as children in need, but as young women ready to give back.
Each will identify a child-headed household — where children are raising children — and deliver an emergency food package filled with love, nourishment, and hope.
But we need your help to increase the number of households we can reach!
Your gift — no matter the size — will put food on a table where there is none, and remind a child they are not forgotten.
Please donate today and be part of a shared act of love. Help us fill one more plate, feeding hope where it’s needed most.

🌱 A bold new step for Kenyan Kids! 🌱

Fifteen years ago, we began with just a handful of rescued girls. Today, those seeds of hope have grown into schools, safe homes, clean water, and now… our most ambitious project yet:

☕ A women-only coffee project.

For us, coffee is part of a daily ritual. For these women, it means daily hope — a chance to earn an income, educate their daughters, and escape cycles of abuse.

This week, the first acre of land was cleared and seedlings planted. It’s just the beginning, but together we can grow so much more.

💙 Every pencil. Every safe place. Every seedling. Every cup of water. It all begins with you.

Your daily ritual, their daily hope.
