Family Learning celebrates families’ achievements
Families from across Aberdeen came together for a special event marking their achievements through Family Learning opportunities provided by Aberdeen City Council.
The occasion, organised by the Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) Family Learning team, was held at Aberdeen Art Gallery and Cowdray Hall on Saturday 17 October, coinciding with the UK-wide Family Learning Month.
The celebration recognised learners who had achieved more than 100 hours of participation in Family Learning opportunities, supporting parents, carers and children to learn, play and grow together.
Councillor Martin Greig, convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Family Learning provides valuable opportunities for families across Aberdeen to learn together, build confidence and strengthen their wellbeing.
“It is fantastic to see so many families reaching this milestone, and I congratulate them on their achievements.”
Councillor Lee Fairfull, vice-convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “Family Learning recognises the important role parents and carers play in their children’s development and provides support that responds to the needs of individual families.
“I would like to thank the Family Learning team for supporting families across Aberdeen and creating opportunities for parents, carers and children to learn and grow together.”
Family Learning is a free service available to families across Aberdeen, offering support designed to help improve skills, confidence and wellbeing.
The team recognises parents and carers as experts in their own children and works alongside families, valuing their knowledge and experience while supporting positive change.
Support available through Family Learning includes:
one-to-one support for parents, carers and their families;
short courses for parents and carers, delivered face-to-face or online;
open-access drop-in sessions covering areas including parenting, health and wellbeing, additional support needs (ASN) and kinship; and
accessible school holiday activities for families across the city.
Families can also receive individual support on issues including parenting confidence, routines and boundaries, additional support needs, child development, budgeting and wellbeing.
The service can help parents and carers strengthen communication with their child’s school and build their confidence to take part in further learning opportunities. Free one-to-one counselling with Grounded Learning is also available to anyone aged over 18.
