SFF works closely with regulators and industry partners to support measures that are sensible, viable and effective in making fishermen’s workplaces safer. This includes promoting safety standards, training and welfare support across the industry.

Conversations around marine protection can often become oversimplified, but the future of Scotland’s seas needs more than broad assumptions. It needs evidence, local knowledge and a clear understanding of how fishing communities work with the marine environment.

Those who work at sea bring generations of experience and practical insight into Scotland’s waters. Their voices should be part of decisions about conservation, fisheries management and future marine planning.

Offshore wind development must take account of the people, communities and marine environment already connected to Scotland’s seas.

This morning on BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast, Elspeth Macdonald, Chief Executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, discussed the impact offshore wind could have on the fishing sector, coastal communities and fish stocks.

A key point raised was fairness. Where compensation is recognised for communities affected by land-based renewable developments, the same principle must apply for those facing offshore impacts, including fishing businesses.
