Beautiful Common toadflax is flowering along a short section of Aberdeen's coastal footpath. Along with Harebell and Devils-bit scabious, this plant is providing important late summer nectar for bumblebees, hoverflies and other pollinators.

Yesterday's solar eclipse attracted many people to observe it from the slopes and summit of Brimmond Hill.
Countryside Officer Simon thought he'd watch the celestial event from Brimmond Hill, and was astounded by the large number of people on and around the hill.
Everyone he saw and spoke to were lovely people, and there wasn't a single portable BBQ or campfire in sight!
While clouds made observing the eclipse challenging, occasional breaks let people see astro-nature putting on a fine display.

Yesterday's Green City Family Fun Day at Hazlehead Park saw hundreds of people stop to chat with staff and volunteers from several organisations.

NESCAN, Techfest, NESBReC, and the Aberdeen City Council Countryside Rangers showed visitors lots about nature and sustainability but, without a shadow of a doubt, the most popular stall was that of the Grampian Ringers.

Members of this group had a mist net set up nearby and many birds were safely caught and untangled, then weighed, measured and released back into the park.

Yesterday, while carrying out a litter pick at the Donmouth Local Nature Reserve, Ranger Jack discovered a badly injured herring gull.

Due to the severity of its injuries, the gull was unable to fly and was vulnerable to disturbance from dogs and other site users. After contacting New Arc Wildlife Rescue for advice, Jack was asked to carefully capture the bird so that it could be collected by one of the charity’s volunteers and assessed.

Sadly, the gull’s injuries were found to be too severe, and the most humane course of action was to put the bird to sleep to prevent any further suffering.

Herring gulls often suffer from a negative reputation, which is unfortunate. While they may appear to be common, they are in fact a Red List species, with UK populations having declined by more than 50%. Like all wildlife, herring gulls deserve our protection and play an important role in the ecosystems they inhabit.

😊 Many thanks to the six friendly and hardworking people from Scottish Enterprise who joined Rangers Jack and Lydia on Thursday to help look after the Kincorth Hill Local Nature Reserve.

🌲 Kincorth Hill (The Gramps) provides valuable habitat for countless species and serves an important amenity space for local residents and visitors alike. Without regular maintenance, the hill would lose many of these vital areas due to encroaching vegetation and invasive species.

🌟 A massive thank you goes out to the fantastic people from Scottish Enterprise who gave up their day to help give The Gramps some much needed TLC. We are incredibly grateful for your input and we hope to welcome you at some of our events again in the future.
