SUMMER SUNDOWNER AT THE SCOTTISH CRANNOG CENTRE
There are few places better suited to an evening of music, poetry and storytelling than a crannog rising from the waters of Loch Tay. Saturday, 29 August 6.30 for 7pm, the new crannog at the Scottish Crannog Centre will open its doors for its first evening event — and it promises to be a fitting celebration of creativity, heritage and the enduring magic of this remarkable setting.
As the summer sun slips towards the horizon, the loch will provide a spectacular backdrop to an evening in which Scotland’s rich traditions meet contemporary voices. Award-winning Scots singer-songwriter Beth Malcolm will bring her powerful combination of traditional song and contemporary folk, offering music that is both deeply rooted and refreshingly alive.
Alongside her, local poets Jon Plunkett, Tim Turnbull and Taylor Strickland will bring an altogether different kind of energy to the crannog. Their work spans the lyrical, the witty and the thought-provoking, reminding us that poetry, like music, has the ability to make us look at familiar things in unfamiliar ways.
What makes the occasion particularly special, however, is the setting. The new crannog is more than an impressive reconstruction; it is a space designed to reconnect us with the landscape, stories and ingenuity of the people who once lived around these waters. To gather there at sunset, with the loch stretching beyond and voices filling the evening air, is to experience heritage not simply as something to be observed, but as something that can still inspire and bring people together.
The first evening event at the new crannog therefore feels like more than another date in the summer calendar. It marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Scottish Crannog Centre — one in which the past and present can meet in unexpected and memorable ways.
There will be no need for grand ceremony. Instead, the invitation is a simple one: come to the loch, listen to some wonderful music and poetry, relax as the evening unfolds, and celebrate the extraordinary creative spirit of Scotland.
