When Aberystwyth Hosted an International Peace Congress

This year marks the centenary of the visit of the International Federation of League of Nations Societies to Aberystwyth. The Federation should have met in Dresden, Germany, but when that was cancelled, David Davies, of the famous Llandinam family, who was a staunch supporter of the University and National Library in Aberystwyth, invited the IFLNS and its 200 delegates to hold the Congress in the town.

This, until recently, little-known history shows that following the First World War Aberystwyth was a hotbed of movements and individuals who struggled tirelessly to promote world peace.

Elgan Davies’s illustrated presentation at 3pm on Thursday, the 10th September takes us through the formation of the League of Nations, the background to the IFLNS visit to Aberystwyth, the support of the people of Ceredigion, the reaction of the national press and the success of the five-day Congress visit.

Pan Gyfarfu Cynhadledd Heddwch Ryngwladol yn Aberystwyth

Mae eleni yn nodi canmlwyddiant ymweliad Ffederasiwn Rhyngwladol Cymdeithasau Cynghrair y Cenhedloedd ag Aberystwyth. Dylai’r Ffederasiwn fod wedi cyfarfod yn Dresden, yr Almaen, ond pan ganslwyd hynny, gwahoddodd David Davies, o deulu enwog Llandinam – a oedd yn gefnogwr cadarn o’r Brifysgol a’r Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yn Aberystwyth – y Ffederasiwn a dros 200 o gynrychiolwyr i gynnal y Gyngres yn y dref.

Mae'r hanes hwn – a oedd tan yn ddiweddar bron wedi ei anghofio – yn dangos bod Aberystwyth, yn dilyn y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, yn ferw o fudiadau ac unigolion oedd yn ymgyrchu’n ddiflino dros heddwch byd-eang.

Bydd cyflwyniad darluniadol Elgan Davies am 3pm ar ddydd Mercher, 9fed Medi yn ein tywys drwy ffurfio Cyngres y Cenhedloedd, cefndir ymweliad y Ffederasiwn ag Aberystwyth, cefnogaeth pobl Ceredigion, ymateb y wasg genedlaethol a llwyddiant ymweliad pum niwrnod y Gyngres.

Did you go to the 1976 Cardigan National Eisteddfod ?
Come and see the free exhibition at the Castle Pavilion which runs until the end of August . The exhibition includes two documentary films from the archive. One from the Cyhoeddi in 1975 - 'Blwyddyn a Diwrnod' performed by the children at Cardigan Primary school and 'A Celtic Celebration' which shows a wealth of people and charachters from 1976 . The exhibition is open everyday between 10 - 4 (last entry at 3pm ) If you would like to visit the Castle a ticket must be purchased.

Pafiliwn 76'

Ymunwch â ni yng Nghastell Aberteifi yn Awst i weld arddangosfa’n coffau’r Eisteddfod yn 800 oed, sef ‘Eisteddfod y Llwch’ yn Aberteifi yn 1976. Dewch i weld ffilm wreiddiol o Eisteddfod 1976 ochr yn ochr â lluniau, deunydd cofiadwy a phethau cyffrous eraill o’r 1970au o archifau ledled Cymru, a drefnir ar y cyd gyda Chastell Aberteifi, Archifdy Ceredigion, Archifdy Sir Benfro, Archifau Cymru ac Archif Ddarlledu Cymru – Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.

Mae Archifdy Ceredigion wedi casglu ynghyd cyfres o luniau trawiadol ar gyfer yr arddangosfa. Mae 10 yn cofio Eisteddfod ddramatig 1976, o’r seremoni cyhoeddi ymlaen, tra bod deg panel yn dwyn i gof rhai o olygfeydd eraill yr 1970au – i bawb sy’n cofio bywyd ar y pryd, bydd hon yn wledd o atgofion, i bawb arall, bydd yn agoriad llygad!

Bydd ffeiliau lluniau gyda rhagor o ddeunydd o’r 1970au a rhai gwrthrychau a llyfrau o’r cyfnod i’w gweld hefyd. A cofiwch godi copi am ddim o ‘ABC yr Archifau’ i ddysgu mwy am yr amrywiaeth gyfoethog o casgliadau sydd ar gael i’w gweld yn Archifdy Ceredigion.

Pavillion 76'

Join us at Cardigan Castle this August for a free exhibition remembering the 800th Eisteddfod, Cardigan’s dramatic ‘Dust Eisteddfod’ of 1976. Come and see original archive footage from the ’76 Eisteddfod alongside photos, memorabilia and other groovy ‘70s gems from archives across Wales, co-organised by Cardigan Castle, Ceredigion Archives, Pembrokeshire Archives, Archives Wales and the Wales Broadcast Archive, National Library of Wales.

Ceredigion Archives has curated a set of twenty striking images for the display. 10 remember the dramatic Eisteddfod of 1976, from the proclamation ceremony onwards, whilst ten panels evoke other sights of the 1970s – for everyone who remembers life then, this will be a treat of recollection. For everyone else it will be a revelation!

There will also be picture folders with more 1970s material and some evocative objects and books from the time, to enjoy at your leisure. Pick up a free copy of the ‘ABC of Archives’ to find out more about the rich diversity of collections available to see at Ceredigion Archives.

Bydd Archifdy Ceredigion Archives, Archifdy Sir Benfro / Pembrokeshire Archives a Chymdeithas Hanes Teulu Dyfed Family History Society yn cymryd rhan mewn sgwrs panel ar faes Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru Ddydd Sadwrn, 8 Awst, rhwng 3-3.45pm, ym Mhabell y Cymdeithasau 1 wedi'i drefnu gan Archifau Byw i gael blas o archifau lleol ac i drafod sut y gallwch gymryd rhan ar lefel leol a chymunedol. Archifdy Ceredigion Archives, Archifdy Sir Benfro / Pembrokeshire Archives and Dyfed Family History Society will be taking part in a panel discussion arranged by Archives Alive on the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru field on Saturday the 8th August, 3-3.45pm, in the Societies 1 tent to showcase local archives and to discuss how you can take part on a local and community level.
