A huge thank you to Viktor and all the fantastic staff at Abingdon Riverside CafΓ© and AV Boats for hosting our Water Safety Event on Tuesday.
It was a great opportunity for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (Official), Abingdon Fire Station, RNLI and TVP South Oxon and Vale of White Horse Neighbourhood Team to come together and engage with the local community, sharing important water safety advice and helping people stay safe in and around the River Thames.
Your support, hospitality and commitment to the local community helped make the event a real success. We are extremely grateful for the warm welcome and excellent facilities provided throughout the day.
Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions and took the time to learn more about staying safe on and around the water this summer.
Working together to keep our communities safe. πŸš’ 🚀 πŸš“

Prevent agricultural fires πŸ”₯🚜
Farmers, by following a few simple steps, you can help mitigate the risk of fire on your farm.
β€’ Check conditions + consult the Fire Severity Index before planning harvesting activities –
β€’ This will help you identify the best time of day to start your harvesting. You can view the Fire Severity Index by visiting https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/328554206f114fc98c707bfc1b880cf7.
β€’ Regular maintenance – Ensure that your equipment is clean and maintained before every harvest activity.
β€’ Help us find you – Provide an accurate location and description of the entrance of your farm to Thames Valley Fire Control Service and wait for firefighters to arrive. You can use what3words
β€’ Know where your water supplies are – Ensure that any available water supplies on your farm are accessible to fire and rescue crews.
β€’ Have contingency arrangements in place – Consider using cultivators to put in fire breaks where safe to do so. If you have water bowsers available to extinguish spot fires ensure that they are near and full of water.
β€’ Store safe – Where possible avoid storing bales near main roads to deter would-be trespassers and arsonists.

πŸ”₯ RED HEAT WARNING – STAY SAFE IN THE HEAT πŸ”₯
A Red Weather Warning for extreme heat is currently in place until Thursday 23:59. Temperatures are expected to reach dangerous levels, increasing the risk of illness, dehydration, and incidents across our communities.
🚨 Key Safety Advice:

Drink plenty of water – don’t wait until you’re thirsty
Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (11am–4pm)
Check on vulnerable family members, neighbours, and colleagues
Never leave children or pets in vehicles

πŸ’§ Think Twice Before Entering Open Water
While it may be tempting to cool off, jumping into rivers, lakes, or quarries can be extremely dangerous:

Cold water shock can cause gasping, panic, and loss of control
Hidden hazards such as currents, debris, and sudden drops
Difficulty getting out once you’re in
Even strong swimmers can quickly get into trouble

🚫 Do not enter water to rescue someone – call 999 and ask for Fire & Rescue
βœ… Instead, stay cool safely:

Use supervised swimming areas where possible
Keep to the shade and wear sunscreen
Take regular breaks and cool down gradually

Stay safe, look out for each other, and make sensible choices during this period of extreme heat

24/06/2026

As the weather gets hotter, rivers, lakes and reservoirs can look tempting.
But even on a hot day, the water can be dangerously cold, causing cold water shock in seconds.

Fifteen young people across the country have already lost their lives this summer.

A simple conversation after school or college today could help your child make safer choices and avoid a tragedy in your family.

β˜€οΈ HEATWAVE WARNING: Stay Safe Around Open Water 🌊
With temperatures rising across Oxfordshire, we know many people will be looking to cool off – but open water can be far more dangerous than it looks.
🚨 Even on a hot day, rivers, lakes and quarries remain very cold, which can trigger cold water shock – causing gasping, panic and making it difficult to swim.
🚨 Many drowning incidents happen when people didn’t intend to enter the water at all, often due to slips or falls near the water’s edge.
🚨 Hidden dangers include strong currents, sudden drops, weeds, debris and difficult exit points.
πŸ”₯ Warmer weather also increases the risk – research shows drowning incidents rise significantly during heatwaves.

βœ… Our safety advice:

Avoid swimming in open water to cool off – choose supervised areas or swimming pools instead
Stay back from the edge, especially after drinking alcohol
Always supervise children closely around water
Never jump in after someone – Call 999, Tell them to float, and Throw something that floats
