On Saturday I was pleased to welcome Maire Emmanuel Flouvat from Argentan and many other guests from France to celebrate the 70th anniversary of our two towns being twinned.

Our guests were welcomed by the Town Crier and Mace Bearer and after speeches, a new twinning document was signed. Guests were treated to a talk on the history of Abingdon by a representative from the Museum and then entertained by Mr Hemming’s Traditional Morris Dancers.

The afternoon continued with some guided walks and visits to the Museum and St Helen’s Church. The Abingdon & District Twinning Society members hosted most of the group and also planned a full day for our guests on Sunday.

HIROSHIMA REMEMBERED

Last night I was honoured to join Abingdon Peace Group and friends at the Peace Pole in the garden at St Ethelwold’s House to remember Hiroshima. After reading a letter from the Mayor of Hiroshima we floated paper lanterns on the Thames; a meaningful and very moving ceremony. Thank you to everyone who helped make the evening so special.

Tribute to Former Mayor and Councillor Nigel Trippett

It is with great sadness that Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council has learned of the passing of former Councillor and Mayor Nigel Trippett, who died peacefully at home on 14 July 2026, surrounded by his family.
Nigel served as Mayor of Abingdon in 1980/81 and made a lasting contribution to the civic life and traditions of the town. During his mayoral year, he presented the town with a model of the Abingdon Bunk railway engine as his civic gift. The model remains on display in the museum, where it continues to be enjoyed by visitors.
Nigel also played a memorable role in celebrating one of Abingdon's most treasured traditions. To commemorate the 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, he led a special Bun Throwing celebration before travelling to Clarence House to present the Queen Mother with one of Abingdon's famous buns.
Nigel understood the importance of Abingdon's civic traditions and took particular comfort in knowing that former Mayors are honoured by the Abingdon flag being flown at half-mast from County Hall. It is fitting that the town recognises his years of dedicated public service in this way.
The Town Council extends its heartfelt condolences to Nigel's family and friends at this difficult time. He will be remembered with affection and gratitude for his commitment to Abingdon, his enthusiasm for its unique heritage, and the legacy he leaves behind through his service to the community.
May he rest in peace.

I was pleased to meet up with the Mayor of Thames-Coromandel at the weekend. Cllr Peter Revell was visiting the UK with his wife Kiri. Abingdon-on-Thames have strong friendship links with Thames on the North Island, New Zealand.

Thanks to Abingdon & District Twin Town Society for setting up this meeting and for a delicious lunch.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Councillor Margaret Crick, who passed away on Friday 10th July 2026. Margaret had been in poor health in recent months but nevertheless her passing has come as a great shock to all her friends and colleagues at the Town Council and in the wider community of Abingdon.

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting DAWN, Didcot, Abingdon & Wantage Talking Newspaper and they were kind enough to let me take part. I read a piece about Abingdon Town Council’s recent Fun & Music in the Park event.

DAWN is a registered charity which provides weekly audio recordings of the Didcot Abingdon and Wantage newspapers, free of charge, for the blind and partially sighted.

It was so nice to see so many people at Fun in the Park on Saturday enjoying the wonderful entertainment, stalls and slightly cooler weather! We had a lovely time and I understand from my fellow Councillors that Music in the Park later in the day was very successful too.

I’m pleased to say that on Saturday I was out and about; firstly at the Abingdon School Leavers’ Ceremony & Prize Giving – good luck to all leavers.

Secondly, I received a very warm welcome from Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers at the historic Ock Street Mayor making. Congratulations to Mayor, Harry Knight.

I recently attended the first (of two) events at Radley College along with Anne Newton, chair of The Abingdon Music Centre.

Some two hundred young people joined together to play Dvorak's New World Symphony.

Various groups had spent the morning together rehearsing a special arrangement. They were clearly enjoying themselves and entertaining an audience of parents and grandparents.

Plenty of musical talent for Abingdon's future.
