The Museum of Military Medicine The army has been at the forefront of medical, dental,veterinary and nursing care since 1660.

The museum tells the story of army medicine and healthcare, human and animal, from the English Civil War to the current day, as Army Medical Services personnel continue to serve across the globe as part of the British Army. The museum shows the contribution made by the army in these four sciences.

One on our volunteer thinks the gentleman on the right to be Lieutenant-General Sir William Cameron Moffat (Major General when this photo was taken)

We think the writing on the cup says "presented by Mr and Mrs Preston.... RAMC/RADC... Ken Preston Memorial Cup for...."

Ken Preson was killed on the Sir Gallahad during the Falklands War. We'd love to know more about this trophy, what it was given for and whether anyone knows the wherebaouts of it today, and the name of the inividual on the left.

When Germany invaded France and the Low Countries on 10 May 1940, Captain J. R. O. Thompson, RAMC, served aboard HM Hospital Ship Paris during the Dunkirk evacuation. He later joined HM Hospital Ship St David, which supported the Allied invasions of Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio between 1943 and 1944.

On the night of 24 January 1944, St David was bombed and sank off Anzio. Thompson organised the evacuation of the seriously wounded before returning below deck to stay with a trapped casualty. He remained with the wounded man and went down with the ship.

Each year on August 26 is 'International Dog Day' an annual observance to recognise the contribution of dogs in our everday lives. The British Army has a long tradition of working with Military Working Dogs and today highly trained dogs assist in protection, detection and tracking.

We found these rules for nurses from the Standing Orders of St. Thomas Hospital. These rules have the date 1699-1752 stamped on the bottom but we think the linen was made much later, perhaps as fun memento to these historic rules.

I am sure our upstanding past and present nurses and medical practioners would never break any of these rules 😇

Ranken joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1909 and demonstrated an interest in the subject of tropical medicine. He was severely wounded in the thigh while attending to battlefield casualties on 19 September 1914. His actions resulted in the recommendation for the award of the Victoria Cross.

We’ve had lots of requests for our QARANC brooch in the past and we’ve just received a new limited batch.

Our brooches are handmade, with the stones individually set by a stone setter, an uncommon trade, according to our supplier and their stone setter they employ is retiring.

As a result, these are the last 3 we’ll have available until our supplier is able to source a new stone setter.

If you’re interested, do have a look soon! They’re currently in very limited supply and usually sell quickly, so it may be some time before we’re able to restock them / available in their current desgin.

What do medals mean?

UK military medals are ranked in a strict order of precedence and generally categorised into four main types: gallantry decorations, campaign medals, operational service medals, and long service awards.
