A very sad day in the history of The Parachute Regiment. 🇬🇧

We will remember them.
Lest we forget. 🪂❤️

Today we remember the men of 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) and The Queen’s Own Highlanders who lost their lives or were wounded in a terrorist attack at Warrenpoint in Northern Ireland on 27 August 1979.

It resulted in the British Army’s greatest loss of life in a single incident in Northern Ireland with 18 men killed.

It occurred during a 20-month tour of duty in Northern Ireland for 2 PARA when a convoy carrying men of 3 Platoon, A-Company was travelling along the coastal road towards the company base at Newry.

As the convoy drew level with a lay-by close to Narrow Water Castle, Provisional IRA terrorists remotely triggered a bomb containing 700lb of explosives, which had been situated in a trailer parked in the lay-by.

The rear 4-ton truck of the convoy, which carried 9 men, took the full force of the explosion and of these, only 1 survived unhurt. The other vehicles in the convoy halted and their occupants ran back to help their comrades.

Further support and medical assistance was soon at the scene and an incident control point was set up next to a gate house by the side of the road.

Just before 1700hrs a second explosion occurred. This was a 1,000lb bomb, initiated by radio control and concealed inside the gate house lodge, demolishing the building and killing a further 12 men and seriously wounding 3 more.

Six men from 2 PARA were killed in the first explosion, with the second blast killing a further 10 from 2 PARA along with 2 from The Queen’s Own Highlanders, including Commanding Officer of the Highlanders, Lieutenant Colonel David Blair.

There was also a civilian casualty, with a young tourist named Michael Hudson unfortunately mistaken for a terrorist and shot after the second bomb explosion.

Men killed in the first bomb explosion: 2 PARA: Cpl JC Giles (3 Platoon, A-Company), L/Cpl CG Ireland (3 Platoon, A-Company), Pte GI Barnes (3 Platoon, A-Company), Pte JA Jones (3 Platoon, A-Company), Pte RDV Jones (3 Platoon, A-Company), Pte M Woods (3 Platoon, A-Company).

Men killed in the second bomb explosion: 2 PARA: Maj PJ Fursman (OC A-Company), L/Cpl DF Blair (OC’s Radio Op, A-Company), WOII W Beard (Drum Major, Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Sgt IA Rogers (Pl Sgt, Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Cpl NJ Andrews (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Cpl L Jones (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Pte R Dunn (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Pte RN England (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Pte TR Vance (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Pte AG Wood (Medium Machine Gun Platoon). The Queen’s Own Highlanders: Lt-Col DNA Blair (CO: 1 QOHLDRS), L/Cpl V MacLeod (CO’s Radio Op, 1 QOHLDRS).

Men wounded at Warrenpoint: 2 PARA: Pte PM Burns (3 Platoon, A-Company), Pte T Caughey (3 Platoon, A-Company), Cpl NH Porter (3 Platoon, A-Company), Cpl SJ Webb (Medium Machine Gun Platoon), Pte MJ Furrow (Medium Machine Gun Platoon).

📖 It’s finally here… only TWO months late! 😂

The Summer Edition of the Aldershot Garrison Magazine has finally arrived and is now on the shelves at your usual pick-up points.

Why the delay? Well… in a slight case of wrong Garrison, wrong magazine, our copies were delivered to Catterick Garrison — while theirs somehow made their way to Aldershot! 🤦‍♀️😂

After a little magazine migration, we’ve finally got them where they belong!

So, if you spot one, grab a copy and have a read. There are some fantastic articles, stories and updates inside😄

Happy reading! 📚

A huge thank you to Allan Thomson, Chief Executive of Aspire Defence Services Limited (ADSL), for the generous donation towards National Armed Forces Day, held in Aldershot and Farnborough in June.

Garrison Commander Lt Col MacPherson presented Allan with a thank you in recognition of the support, which helped provide much-needed resources for the serving personnel, cadets and veterans who worked, supported and marched throughout the weekend.

A fantastic example of the continued support from our local partners for the Armed Forces community. 🇬🇧👏

A great morning at the WOs’ & Sgts’ Mess today, as Garrison Commander Lt Col MacPherson and Garrison Sergeant Major (GSM) WO1 Foster hosted veterans from The Shots Foundation Veterans Hub.

GSM Foster gave an interesting presentation on warfare in Ukraine, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone attending. Our veterans were also thanked for their service and the contribution they continue to make to our community.

A delicious curry lunch was enjoyed, giving everyone the opportunity to catch up and chat over lunch.

A fantastic morning all round! Thank you to everyone who came along, and a special thank you to the Mess staff for their warm welcome and hospitality. 🇬🇧👏

Wishing Jamie all the very best as he moves on to an exciting new opportunity with QPR in the Community Trust. 👏⚽️

It’s been a real pleasure working with Jamie. He’s been superb in supporting and engaging with the military community, and his enthusiasm and commitment will be greatly missed.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for the Shots Foundation and our local community since 2023. Good luck, Jamie — wishing you every success in your new role! 💙👏

The Shots Foundation would like to pass on their thanks and best wishes to Head of Foundation, Jamie MacAllister who will be moving on in mid-September.

Jamie joined us in 2023 and has been the driving force in the growth the Shots Foundation has seen since then. He leaves to take up an exciting opportunity at QPR in the Community Trust. We wish him well.

Jamie will be replaced by our current Disability and Inclusion Officer, Glenn Brailey. As such, we are now hiring for a new post, a Sport and Education Officer, to help grow our reach in local schools.

Today we visited the Community Grub Hub to drop off donations from Aldershot Garrison Headquarters. ❤️

With the school holidays underway, this support is especially important for families who may be struggling.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful volunteers for everything you do — whether you’re working in the warehouse, on the shop floor or in the café area. Your kindness and dedication ensure visitors can have a cup of tea, something to eat, and, just as importantly, someone to talk to. ☕️🥪❤️

Thank you for all that you do for our community. 👏
