South Tynedale Railway

Welcome to the South Tynedale Railway. Enjoy a scenic ride along the valley.

Running northwards from Alston in Cumbria, England's highest market town, the narrow gauge South Tynedale Railway crosses into Northumberland to a temporary terminus at Lintley. Its heritage steam and diesel trains run through lovely valley scenery with the high moors of the Pennines on either side. Very soon we will start to rebuild the tracks onwards from Lintley to the Northumbrian village of Slaggyford. We hope that eventually the railway will once again go all the way to its original junction with the main line at Haltwhistle. There is a lineside footpath from Alston to Lintley and the path continues from there along the old trackbed. At Alston station you will find a cafe, gift shop, discovery centre, viewing workshops and free parking for cars and coaches.

TRAINS CANCELLED - HIGH WINDS - SUNDAY 25th OCTOBER
To ensure the safety of passengers and our railway volunteers, train services are cancelled for tomorrow Sunday 25th of October 2026. This is due to an amber warning for wind speed from the Met Office, which has forecast wind gusts of 63 MPH for the North Pennines.
Our next timetabled services are on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th of October.
The Crossing Cafe at Alston will be operating as normal.

Looking like it's going to be a crisp and sunny weekend, perfect for a steam train ride through the countryside! Naklo is in service today, The Little Buffet car at Slaggyford is open for drinks and snacks, Scotch Broth is on the menu at The Crossing Cafe and it's suitable for veggies and vegans too!
Make a day of it, Alston town centre is just a short walk away and there are lots of independent shops to explore and The Hub Museum, adjacent to the railway, is well worth a visit.

We can't believe it's the final month of our regular season!
Trains will run at weekends with some extra services in October half term.
And don't forget our Halloween trains on 31st.......do you dare to book?!

There's definitely an autumnal feel in the air now so time for a menu change in the Crossing Cafe! Cream of vegetable soup served with crispy croutons and fresh parsley served with a warm roll and butter. Delicious. Trains are running this weekend and on Tuesday 29th September. Photo (c) K Hickin

Just a reminder that we are not operational tomorrow Saturday 12th September as we have a private event. The Crossing Cafe and Little Buffet Car will be closed too. We are running as normal on Sunday 13th September. You can see the rest of our September running days below.
