Kaleidoscopes of colour may be spotted visiting the large lakes of the reserve. Look out for northern lapwings! Best seen reflecting in sunshine, although not exclusively, observe their smokey quartz neck, pearl-white throat and underside, and most notably, the breathtakingly lustrous back and wings; tourmaline edged feathers of topaz and emerald. Beautiful jewels of the avain world!🐦💎🐦💎🐦

Join a member of staff for a leisurely guided walk around the reserve, during our West Chevington open day. We'll look at the different habitats there and talk about the work the Biodiversity Boost Project completed to enhance habitats and increase biodiversity.

🦗Spotting smaller and rather elusive, residents is always exciting. When strolling along the paths of the reserve, keep your eyes open for a blade of grass dropping or bouncing upwards, or perhaps the leaf on the stem of a wildflower.

Stay still and simply look and listen! You may spot a gorgeous, green grasshopper, often visible during the summer months in species rich grassland and woodland habitats on the reserve.

You may hear and see males rubbing their hind legs against comb-like structures on their forewings, which creates a ‘song’, sounding like a long and loud ‘churring’ noise, similar to the ticking of a free-wheeling bicycle. This behaviour is called ‘stridulation’ and is the mating call used to attract females. After mating, eggs are deposited in soil, from where they will hatch the following spring.

Measuring between 1.4cm and 2.3cm long, the common green grasshopper is mainly green but sometimes has brownish flanks. Most grasshoppers are best identified by their ‘stridulation’ or song. The song of the common green grasshopper lasts 20 seconds and longer.
