ROYAL RECOGNITION | Mother and daughter PCSOs Rachel and Sarah Carne were royally recognised after attending a Buckingham Palace Garden Party this month.

Nominated for their work in the community as Police Community Support Officers, and in supporting the Police Cadet scheme, both mum and daughter ditched their uniform for fascinators and frocks as they mingled with Queen Camilla and other garden party guests.

Rachel, who works in the Leighton Buzzard Community Policing Team, said: "Sarah and I had the most amazing day, where I had the privilege to talk to the Queen and give her a Christian Police Association bible. Sarah wrote a bible verse in the front cover, and a lady from the community we serve crocheted a cross, which was placed in the page the bible verse referred to.

"I always enjoy a free cup of tea, but this location was slightly more upmarket than McDonalds when I am on duty!"

It is always good to see our community officers receiving recognition for their duties, which both Rachel and Sarah - who is part of our Ampthill Community Policing Team & Surrounding Area - go above and beyond for.

If you want to make a difference within your area, we are currently recruiting PCSOs.

| Out and about today? We’re asking everyone to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it at gov.uk/ACT.

In an emergency, always call 999.

Across Bedfordshire, our Community Cohesion team is proactively engaging with residents and community leaders, providing reassurance and continuing vital work through our No Place For Hate campaign.

Wider policing activity is also underway in response to increased community tensions nationally, with increased police presence and partnership working to help keep all communities safe.

Being vigilant doesn’t mean being alarmed. By looking out for one another, raising the alarm when something isn’t right, and continuing to stand together, we can help ensure Bedfordshire remains a safe and welcoming place for all.

| Last week marked , where we shared the vast and varied work of our patrol teams – but they’re not working alone.

Our Specials are volunteers who support full-time officers: same legal powers, same uniform, same equipment and exactly the same variety of incidents to attend.

We caught up with SC Rob who, in addition to his day job, was out on Patrol in Luton last week, Tuesday and Saturday.

“You will have heard it before, but it’s true - no two shifts are the same!

“Tuesday night, for instance started with some anti-social behaviour around a town centre restaurant We attended and three young people were given Community Protection Warning letters. These are the first step in the process of formal action and outline what the recipient has to do to prevent further sanctions; in this case leave the town centre. They can be escalated if the recipients don’t take notice, though in this case that wasn’t necessary.

“My partner and I were then dispatched to a domestic incident with allegations of serious sexual offences. A suspect was arrested and transported to custody, leaving us to talk to the victim to ensure appropriate safeguarding. It was then back to the station to do the necessary paperwork for a formal investigation. It was a late finish!

“Saturday afternoon saw a bluelight run up the M1 investigating people suspected of selling stolen goods. Suspects not found on this occasion, but some useful intelligence gathered. We then had a few minutes for a comfort break at the Motorway Services police hub before returning to Luton to assist with a report of theft. On to another bluelight job to a suspected burglary in progress, backing up other officers.

“The final job of the night – a challenging run through heavy traffic to assist with a concern for welfare where we carried out a number of inquiries. Once again, the shift ended with, yes, you’ve guessed …paperwork. Still at least we were away on time which was a welcome change: another busy but productive shift - back again next week!"

Always wanted to work in policing but already in a career you love? If you can spare 16 hours a week then being a Special could give you the best of both worlds.

This morning your Community Team visited a local pre‑school to talk about our roles as a PC/PCSO in Bedfordshire. The children loved trying on some of the uniform, having a good look at the blue lights, and having a look around the inside of a police car.

They had a brilliant time, and we’re also pleased to report that we recruited at least four new officers, who will be joining us in around… 2041! 🚓😄

Thank you for having us!

| We have had reports of a number of bikes and e-bikes being stolen in robberies recently across the county.

We have stepped up patrols in town centres and are developing operations to tackle robberies head on.

But you can help us to help you by making it harder for bike thieves:
• Register your bike here: https://orlo.uk/hqurG
• Identify your bike and protect it with a security marking kit and warning label
• Do consider attaching a tracking device concealed under your saddle or in your handlebars
• Every time you leave your bike at home or out and about LOCK IT SECURELY

These precautions will deter thieves and, if your bike is stolen and later recovered, make it easier for us to return it.

It’s also worth being aware of which e-bikes are legal…

Legal electric bikes – also known as an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) – can be purchased and ridden without registration, insurance or a driver’s licence. They must be:

🚲 Pedal Assistance Only
The motor must assist only when the rider is pedalling. It cannot provide power on its own (i.e.,no throttle-only operation unless limited to 6 km/h for starting).

🚲 Motor Power Limit
The motor must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts.

🚲 Speed Limit
The motor must cut off assistance when the bike reaches 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

🚲 Age Requirement
Riders must be at least 14 years old to legally ride an e-bike on public roads.

If an e-bike does not meet the above criteria, it is classified as a moped or motorcycle, meaning you would need; a driving licence, insurance, registration, helmet use and compliance with vehicle tax and MOT (if applicable).

You can find more advice on preventing bicycle theft here: https://orlo.uk/nxDvq

Don’t forget you can report issues directly to us here: https://orlo.uk/1cf7f or call 101. You can also report anonymously at Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

| We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Flitwick last night (Friday).

Officers were called at 11.50pm to reports that a vehicle had been involved in a collision with three teenage boys, two believed to be on a pushbike and one on a push-along scooter in Greenfield Road.

Emergency services attended and one of the boys was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two boys were taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The driver had left the scene before officers arrived and the vehicle - a blue BMW 318D - was located with significant damage shortly after in a nearby street.

Two people – a man and a woman, both in their 20s – were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving over the prescribed limit and driving above the specified limit of a controlled drug.

We are currently following several lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances around the collision and are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dash cam footage, doorbell footage or CCTV to get in touch as soon as possible.

You can report online https://orlo.uk/Bjg9K or call 101 quoting Operation Birch.
