How would Ellen Paul vote on the bills that protect children and seniors? She has answered in advance.

Some votes are not about party or ideology at all, she says. Protecting children. Keeping seniors safe. Letting the public see how its institutions are run. Andover Elementary just posted the largest one-year gain of any town school district in Connecticut. Not in one subject. In both.

On the state's performance index, Andover's English score rose 6.1 points and its math score rose 6.8. Out of 164 town districts, no one else gained more in either subject.

The state as a whole moved 0.3 points in English and 0.6 in math.

Two candidates in the 55th, one question: who should decide about reproductive health care?

Steve Weir's answer, per four years of votes: no on protecting access (even as a majority of his own caucus voted yes), no on campus health services, no on equitable access to care. Every contested bill, the same answer.

Ellen Paul's answer: women and their doctors decide, not politicians. Defend Connecticut's protections. Make access real in every part of the state, from maternal care to contraception.

Why do our property taxes keep climbing? Here is one reason: the state formula that funds our schools has not been updated since 2013. When state aid lags, town budgets strain, and homeowners fill the gap.

So it mattered when $630,000 in new aid for our five towns came up this spring. It passed 127-21, with most Republicans voting yes. Rep. Steve Weir voted no.

Meet Ellen Paul.

She is a librarian and nonprofit executive who leads the Connecticut Library Consortium, working with more than 1,000 libraries across the state, public, school, and college alike, to improve services and save taxpayers money. She served on Congressman Joe Courtney's staff. She grew up in eastern Connecticut and lives in Glastonbury with her family.

She has spent her career bringing people together to solve problems. Now she is running for State Representative in the 55th District.
