The Diocese of Chelmsford has formally pledged its support to the Armed Forces by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. This important commitment was marked during a special Choral Evensong at Chelmsford Cathedral last Monday.

The signing was led by the Bishop of Chelmsford, alongside the Dean, the Diocesan Secretary, the Commander of Colchester Garrison, the Command Sergeant Major of Army Reserve Centre West Ham, and the Senior Chaplain of 16 Air Assault Brigade.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, along with their families and the bereaved, are treated with fairness and respect.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the bombing of The Royal Military Chapel - The Guards' Chapel in June 1944. On that fateful Sunday, a V1 flying bomb struck during Matins, killing 124 people and injuring over 100. Among them was British Army Chaplain, the Revd Ralph Whitrow, who was leading the service. ✝

As we remember all those who lost their lives, we honour their lives, their faith, and the community gathered together that day. We also pause to reflect on the enduring role of chaplains, who continue to stand alongside soldiers and their families in times of both peace and conflict.

May we never forget those who were lost, and may their memory continue to be honoured. 🙏

We are delighted to share that Veterans Chaplaincy Scotland has been awarded £20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland to support our new Chaplaincy Mapping Project.

This funding will allow us to work with veterans, chaplains, churches, charities and partner organisations across Scotland to better understand existing chaplaincy provision, identify gaps, strengthen referral pathways and build a clearer picture of how chaplaincy supports veterans and their families.

We know that many veterans turn to chaplains not simply for faith support, but because they offer trusted relationships, a listening ear, understanding of military culture and help during some of life's most difficult challenges.

Over the next 12 months, we look forward to meeting veterans and organisations across Scotland, listening to experiences, sharing learning and exploring how we can work together to create a stronger and more connected network of support.

The graves of two unknown soldiers from World War 1 have been identified and the headstones replaced. Padre Rees, Chaplain to 1 PWRR, had the honour of leading the joint rededication service in Belgium for Lance Corporal Springate and Serjeant Stevens of the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment.

The Chaplain General, together with the Grenadier Guards Chaplain and the AHQ Staff Chaplain, had the honour of leading the consecration of two new Colours for the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards at Buckingham Palace.

The occasion marked a significant moment in the regiment's history, as one of the new Colours will be carried by The King's Company at the King's Birthday Parade on 13th June.

Our chaplains continue to play a vital role in remembering and honouring those who gave their lives in service. It is both a privilege and responsibility to lead Commonwealth War Graves Commission rededication services and burials, ensuring that the fallen are remembered with dignity and care.

Recently Padre Day, one of our newer chaplains who serves with 22 and 26 Engineer Regiments, travelled to Belgium to lead four rededication services. These services honoured two previously missing officers and two soldiers from the First World War, whose stories can now be properly marked and remembered.✝

Moments like these are a powerful reminder of the enduring commitment to remembrance and the importance of recognising every individual who gave their life.
