All-weather lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry RNLI launched shortly after 9:30am today (Friday 21 August) to support HM Coastguard in a search for a missing person overboard from a passenger vessel approximately 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath.

Both RNLI lifeboats assisted aircraft and several vessels in a comprehensive search before returning to their respective stations at 15:30.

Our Visits Team will be hosting Lifeboat Visits on the following dates during August, September and October where you will be able to come in and see our D-class inshore lifeboat Akira and have an external visit to view our Shannon all-weather lifeboat Robert and Catherine Steen.

Entry is free and there is no requirement to book for these open visits, just turn up between 1:30pm and 3:30pm on the following dates and our Visits Team will be delighted to host you and tell you about our lifeboats and how we go about saving lives at sea along the East Neuk of Fife.

22 & 23 August

06, 12, 19, 20, & 27 September

03, 04, 11, 17, 18, & 24 October

These visits are designed as casual, drop-in visits to enable as many supporters as possible the opportunity to come and see our lifeboats. However, if you are planning to travel long distances, or if you would prefer to have a private individual, family or group visit, you can arrange a full Station Tour, which will give you a personalised tour of our lifeboat station. To arrange a Station Tour, please contact our Lifeboat Visits Officer, Simon Full, by emailing [email protected] and we will do our utmost to fit in with your travel plans.

Our all-weather and inshore lifeboats recently took part in a joint training exercise with anti-submarine warfare Merlin Mk2 helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, part of the Merlin Helicopter Force based at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose.

Exercises like these are invaluable in helping our crews maintain and develop the lifesaving skills they rely on when responding to emergencies at sea.

Part of the aircrew for the exercise was Jody, a former Anstruther RNLI crew member who grew up in Pittenweem. It was a pleasure to have Jody aboard our Shannon-class lifeboat for the very first time. And as you’ll see from the video, Jody made a rather swift exit, but we look forward to welcoming him back aboard again soon!

Lifeboat Visit Sun 26 July 2026 Cancelled

It is with regret that, due to operational reasons, we have had to cancel the scheduled Lifeboat Visit for Sunday 26 July. Our apologies for any inconvenience that this may cause those that have made travel plans to come and see us.

We do have scheduled visit dates in August, so we hope that you can rearrange and come and see us over the summer.

With more hot weather forecast this week, the RNLI and Water Safety Scotland are teaming up to remind everyone to stay safe while enjoying the water 🌊

A project providing life-saving training and equipment to coastal businesses and residents to help prevent tragic drownings is paying dividends in Fife.

More than 500 people have now been trained up in what to do in an emergency as part of the Waterside Responder Scheme in a bid to cut the number of incidents around the region’s rivers, waterways, harbours and beaches.

Every year, around 400 people drown in the seas and inland waters of the UK, and many of these deaths could have been prevented if there had been quick response from someone who had the right training and equipment to help.

With that in mind, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) devised the Water Responder Scheme to pass on basic skills and knowledge to hospitality staff, security staff and people living alongside waterways that would help them safely assist in the rescue of a person in water prior to the arrival of emergency services.

Local water safety officer David Corstorphine picked up the mantle in the East Neuk, and staff at dozens of local businesses and five Fife leisure centres have now taken part in free training sessions.
