🇬🇧 Armed Forces Week 2026 🫡

This Sunday sees the start of a week-long programme of events that the Regiment will attend, as we come together to celebrate the work of the Armed Forces Community. During Armed Forces Week, the Regiment will be in attendance at our NHS partner flag raising ceremonies, civil events and community fun days. If you see ourselves out and about, come over and say hello 😃

Members of 3 Medical Regiment are proudly taking part in this years York Dragon Boat Race to raise money for CLAPA (Cleft Lip and Palate Association), a charity that supports children and families affected by cleft lip and palate conditions across the UK.

[ TRADITIONS ]

On June 4th, the historic walls of Pontefract Castle echoed to the powerful notes of The Rifles’ Sounding Retreat.

Marking 80 years since the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry earned the Freedom of Wakefield, the evening brought past and present together. Notable in attendance were local dignitaries, the Lord Lieutenant, and regimental veterans. The Rifles’ bugles stood as a proud symbol of our shared heritage.

[ YORKSHIRE BIG CURRY LUNCH ]

Last week, the historic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York played host to the Yorkshire Big Curry Lunch, bringing together veterans, serving personnel, businesses, charities and supporters from across Yorkshire and the North East in support of the Army’s national charity.

Events like this are a powerful reminder that the Armed Forces community extends far beyond the barracks gate. From local employers and civic leaders to volunteers and serving soldiers, the region once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting those who have served and continue to serve our nation.

Founded in 1944, the Army Benevolent Fund has spent more than 80 years providing lifelong support to soldiers, veterans and their families when they need it most. Whether helping those facing financial hardship, supporting independent living, or providing assistance during times of crisis, the charity remains a vital pillar of the Army family.

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to spend time with Normandy veteran Ken Cooke, who will celebrate his 101st birthday in August. His presence served as a powerful reminder of the generations of service and sacrifice that continue to inspire us today.

HQ North would also like to recognise the generosity of the event sponsors, supporters and volunteers whose contributions helped make the day such a success. Particular thanks go to the soldiers from 2 Signal Regiment and The Royal Dragoon Guards, whose support throughout the event was invaluable.

Together, the people of Yorkshire and the North East continue to demonstrate the strength of community, service and support that underpins the Army family.

🏆 CHAMPIONS AGAIN! 🏆🎣

Over the past 48 hours, the 1 LANCS Fishing Team took on The Fusiliers at Trent View Carp Fishery in what proved to be a hard-fought and challenging competition.

The Fusiliers got off to a flying start, taking an early lead with an impressive 18lb common carp. However, 1 LANCS responded later that evening when OIC CSgt Parkinson landed two fantastic fish weighing 24lb and 27lb 5oz. Shortly afterwards, Cpl Woodhouse added two more fish to the tally at 19lb 10oz and 21lb 1oz, putting 1 LANCS back in front.

The following night, the Fusiliers fought back with three more fish, but despite their efforts, they couldn't quite close the gap.

After an excellent contest, 1 LANCS secured the victory by just 1lb 9oz! 🥇

A special mention goes to CSgt Parkinson, who also took home the Biggest Fish Award with his impressive 27lb 5oz carp. 👏

Congratulations to the team, captained by Kgn Wheatcroft, on another outstanding win.

The team would like to thank Trent View Fisheries for hosting the event, the Fusiliers team for a great competition, and the Regiment for its continued support.
