Arlesey Town Council

Arlesey Town Council Information about the Town Council, its members, details of meetings, committees and services provided as well as information about the local area.

Arlesey is a small town situated in the county of Bedfordshire, with a population of over 5000 and extends for about 3 miles along the River Hiz valley. In historic times, Arlesey was a Royal Manor (Manor of Arleseybury) and a market town, once known as the most prosperous parish in the area and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. St Peters Church is situated at the Church End side of the town and

was built over 900 years ago by the monks of Waltham Abbey. Arlesey is a very friendly and welcoming community, with young and old working together to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. All communities are dependent on having people willing to work to improve things and Arlesey is fortunate in having a number of voluntary organisations and recreational facilities, all adding to the rich pattern of life. Arlesey has good transport links whether by road or rail. Details of these can be found in our transport section. Arlesey was given a significant boost to its development by the re-opening of the railway station. This was extensively refurbished and re-opened on 1st October 1988 and provides an excellent service to the larger local towns of Stevenage, Biggleswade and Sandy, as well as to London and Peterborough. The town benefits from a range of shops and community services, including a health centre, library, schools and recreational facilities. You can find more details of these by clicking on the links on the left of the page. Situated at the junction of House Lane and High Street, is the Town's War Memorial and is a reminder of all the brave men of Arlesey, who gave their lives during both World Wars. They are particularly remembered at the Memorial Service, held in November each year and at the annual Civic Service.

More planters are on the way! The Town Council Groundsman is busy making more council planters that the Women's Institute have kindly agreed to fill and maintain to further enhance the aesthetic of the parish and help our pollinators too. A great example of collaborative working between the two groups.

Would your community group/venue like to manage a council planter? drop us a line and let us know if you are interseted

Where would you like to see more planters in Arlesey? Let us know and you never know, it may be deliverable (dependent on location, land ownership and the usual considerations)

Did you guess what was outside Arlesey Resource Centre and Library or pop by to have a look over the bank holiday?

We now have our very own SuDS planter (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) kindly donated to Council from ResilienTogether as part of the flood mitigation programme for the Pix Brook. ResilienTogether are installing SuDS to monitor the flow of water into the Pix Brook. This SuDS location by the library is a great opportunity for Arlesey residents to see one close up and watch how it works.

Terry from BioScapes installed the SuDS on an extremely hot day! Our Mayor, Cllr Arkle helped plant it up and learnt a lot from Terry about SuDS playing a vital role in increasing biodiversity as well as being used to mitigate flood risk. SuDS provide habitats for a variety of wildlife species including bees, ladybirds, hedgehogs and newts... We are excited to see who visits!
