Stonehenge is one of those places that feels almost surreal in person. I visited a while back, and standing there surrounded by stones that have been in place for thousands of years gives you a real sense of just how deep history runs in this part of England.

Dating back to roughly 3000 BC, the site has long been a mystery. No one knows exactly how the stones were transportedโ€”some came from over 150 miles away in Walesโ€”or precisely why they were arranged the way they are. What we do know is that it played an important role in prehistoric life, possibly linked to rituals, astronomy, or burial practices.

The modern visitor centre adds a lot to the experience, with immersive audio-visual displays, archaeological finds, and even life-sized Neolithic homes showing how people once lived. Itโ€™s all maintained by English Heritage in partnership with National Trust.

Set in Old Portsmouth, the Round Tower was first constructed around 1418 as part of the cityโ€™s coastal defences. Initially a wooden structure built for King Henry V, it helped protect the harbour from enemy ships, with a defensive chain stretched across the water in times of danger.

The tower was rebuilt in stone in the 1490s and later expanded with connecting ramparts. During the Napoleonic period and into the 19th century, it continued to be updated, including the addition of a gun platform on its roof.

Today, itโ€™s a well-preserved historic site next to a popular beach, known for its impressive views over the Solent.

Set just outside Odiham, these striking ruins are among the very few castles built by King John. He is believed to have selected this location after a visit in 1204, as it lies neatly between Windsor and Wi******er. Over time, the castle has been at the heart of several key moments in historyโ€”including the period surrounding the Magna Carta, a French siege, its connection to the de Montfort family, a rebellion, and even the imprisonment of a Scottish king.

Thereโ€™s no cost to explore the site. While facilities are limited, its setting beside the Basingstoke Canal makes it an ideal spot for a quiet and scenic walk.

Located just beyond Odiham, the remains of this castle are a rare example of King Johnโ€™s building projectsโ€”one of only three he ordered. Thought to have been chosen after his visit in 1204, the site sits conveniently between Windsor and Wi******er. Throughout its history, it has been tied to major events, from the time of the Magna Carta to a French siege, the rule of the de Montfort family, a rebellion, and even the holding of a Scottish king as a prisoner.

Itโ€™s free to visit, and while facilities are minimal, the castleโ€™s position alongside the Basingstoke Canal makes it a peaceful spot for a walk.

Knossos isnโ€™t just ruinsโ€”itโ€™s a glimpse into a civilisation that shaped early Europe ๐Ÿบ. As the largest Bronze Age site on the island, it was once the centre of Minoan life, filled with grand structures, colourful artwork, and stories that still echo todayโ€”like the legend of the Minotaur ๐Ÿ‚ and King Minos.

A short trip away, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum was just as impressive, packed with fascinating finds that add even more depth to the visit ๐Ÿ”

Nothing prepares you for seeing the Pyramids of Giza up closeโ€ฆ it honestly feels surreal.

From exploring the pyramids to camel rides in the desert ๐Ÿชโ˜€๏ธ and finally standing face-to-face with the Great Sphinx of Gizaโ€”every moment felt special.

We also spent time at the Grand Egyptian Museum, and seeing Tutankhamunโ€™s treasures in person was just incredible.

A trip full of history, beauty, and memories weโ€™ll always keep โค๏ธ

Spent some time exploring Calshot Castle โ€” a small but mighty fortress with a story that goes back nearly 500 years. Built between 1539 and 1540 on the orders of Henry VIII, it was part of a chain of coastal defences designed to protect England from potential invasion.

Its position right beside Southampton Water made it especially important for guarding access to one of the regionโ€™s busiest ports. Today, the castle stands as a reminder of that turbulent time, surrounded by open skies, sea views, and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with its military past.

Itโ€™s an easy and interesting place to visit, whether youโ€™re into history or just fancy a scenic walk by the coast โ€” definitely worth adding to your Hampshire list.
