The hardest workers in the gardens this week 🐝🌹

With roses blooming across the gardens, the bumble bees have been particularly busy among the planting - a small but vital part of keeping gardens like ours thriving.

Sadly, Britain’s bumble bee populations are in decline, with habitat loss and changing environments making life much harder for these tiny but essential pollinators. Gardens filled with pollinator-friendly planting can play an important role in helping them thrive again - which is one more reason we’re rather fond of our busiest visitors.

Walking into this room, you might assume it was designed to impress. In many ways, it was - although not originally as a dining room.

Back in 1180, Henry II had a chapel built on this very site. Centuries later, the 8th and 9th Dukes restored it for use as their private Catholic chapel, before the 11th Duke relocated the chapel in the 1790s to the old College buildings beside the Fitzalan Chapel.

What remained was an extraordinary space with soaring Gothic architecture. Today, the former chapel forms Arundel Castle’s striking dining room - one of the many spaces within the Castle that still reflects centuries of change, adaptation and history.

When you’ve been looking everywhere for a fairytale castle… and then you find one that’s real. 🌹🏰

May in the gardens at Arundel Castle is beautiful. Roses are blooming beneath the castle walls, alliums are bursting through the borders, and butterflies seem to appear around every corner.

Not bad for a day in Sussex. ✨

Three days of medieval life, battle reenactments and castle defence at Arundel Castle ⚔️

Set in 1480, as England emerges from the turmoil of the Wars of the Roses, a French raiding party has crossed the Channel and threatens the Sussex coast. With only a small garrison left to defend the castle, the Earl’s household must hold the fortress until reinforcements arrive.

From Saturday 23rd – Monday 25th May, the castle grounds will be transformed with living history encampments, medieval crafts, cooking, weapons and armour displays, archery and two live skirmishes each day.

Included with admission:
⚔️ Medieval festival and skirmishes
🏹 Have-a-go activities
🛡️ Medieval living history displays
🏰 Access to the castle and keep
🌹 Entry to the gardens - with the rose gardens looking particularly beautiful right now

Whether you’re coming for the history, the battles, the gardens or simply a good family day out, there’s something for all ages across the weekend.

Wake up and smell the roses 🌹

The Rose Garden at Arundel Castle is really coming into its own again this season, beneath the castle walls.

Last summer saw a major replanting project, including the replacement of the traditional box hedging with lavender - a change that’s already bringing a softer feel to the garden, alongside plenty of interest for pollinators too.

Even on grey days, there’s something very special about this view.

Over 1,000 lavender plants going into the gardens at Arundel Castle this week.

A huge job for the garden team, but one that will completely change this part of the gardens once everything starts to establish and flower over the summer.

Lavender is brilliant in a garden like ours, not just because it looks beautiful, but because the pollinators absolutely love it. Bees, butterflies and other insects are drawn to it, so planting on this scale genuinely helps support the wider garden ecosystem too. It’s also a really practical plant for long hot summers, coping well in dry conditions once established.

There’s also something about lavender in an English garden that just feels right. The colour, the scent, the sound of bees buzzing around it - it brings so much life.

We’re looking forward to seeing this area develop over the season. 💜
