A visit to a completed solar array, carefully arranged to minimise impact on a listed building beyond. We achieved planning permission for this installation last year and worked with who carried out the site survey and Calumma the ecology survey

The Grenfell tragedy and the enquiry that followed will forever be a mirror held up to our industry in everything that we do.

Our response to the Grenfell Inquiry Phase 2 report ⬇️

RIBA Chair of Board Jack Pringle said:

“We welcome this thorough examination of the causes of the tragedy at Grenfell Tower and accept the report’s findings.

It is only through the objective, independent and expert analysis of the evidence so sadly created by the events of 14 June 2017 that a safer built environment can emerge.

The failures which led to the fire were system-wide, with myriad contributing factors in the years preceding, on the morning of, and in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The report makes clear that people’s safety requires reform of structures and regulations. This includes systemic change within the construction industry, and a fundamental shift in culture and behaviours. This is a collaborative endeavour and RIBA has committed to playing a leading role.

As the Inquiry also notes, RIBA has taken steps since June 2017 to improve education and training in our profession. With the benefit of these comprehensive findings, and as recommended, we will review the measures already introduced.

Many of the report’s insights and recommendations, particularly on the role and responsibilities of an architect, have great relevance for our members. We will take time to study them in detail, update our members, and continue to play an active role in the creation of a safer built environment.”

I’m grateful for another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review received today from a recent client - a glazing manufacturer needing detailed design drawings developed.

Ben Heb Architecture received a 5-star Yell review on 14 Jun 2024.

I have recently used Ben to draw scalable drawings for a large project we are working on to submit to our client for approval and found Ben very easy and approachable to talk with. Ben has a keen eye for detail and I was made to feel like he wanted all details to be exactly as I needed, and any item...

Well pleased to have received a Planning Approval today for a large solar installation next door to a listed property. Nailed it with zero queries from the Planners because the information and supporting documents were spot on.

Ben was our architect for a barn conversion. The circa 1980s steel-framed barn had little appeal, but after always wanting to build our own home, we immediately had a vision for something really special. We worked closely with Ben to achieve a light, modern, Scandinavian design including sky lights....

Enjoyed spotting this building on a morning walk in Wandsworth. I remember it being in the press but I’ve not seen it in the flesh till now. One of the LIFT scheme builds of the early 2000’s. Special for its protected timber cladding. Buschow Henley architects

Thomas Heatherwick (TH) has a very creative mind and he's a brilliant designer with huge energy. I do have utmost respect for him and his work. But I feel his enthusiasm has always tended to be expressed with massive statements that whilst sounding or looking grand they've rarely been without controversy. For example one of his early pieces, his Harvey Nichs. window ...and now in his podcast 'Building Soul', his idea that Le Corbusier is to blame for a 'Blandemic' of architectural design.

Thomas' energy has often got the better of him as he rushes to express himself with sweeping and off the mark statements. (The current president of the RIBA is not the first non-white president of the RIBA. I would think that would have been our great man Sunand Prasad.)

I found it rather ironic in the last episode of the podcast series where TH was keen to divert attention from himself and point to another fantastic design: the development of Borneo Sporenburg in Amsterdam. Look closely at each elevation on that streetscape Thomas... in each facade, what do you see if you don't see details and proportions born from modernism and the great ideas that came from Bauhaus and the likes of Le Corbusier?

Having listened to TH's Podcast series Building SouI, I haven't managed to identify in my mind what buildings or architects he's actually criticising. I'm feeling none the wiser from his ideas and criticisms of today's architecture. My feeling is that today's architecture shows a huge interest in materials, detailing, the environment, creativity and humanity.
