Schematic Play Urges or Schemas…

Schematic play happens when babies, toddlers and young children are involved in repeated actions or certain behaviours as they explore the world around them and try to find out how things work. We call these specific actions or behaviours 'Schemas'.

Here are some of the most common schemas however the list is not limited to:
-Connecting
-Orientation
-Transporting
-Trajectory
-Positioning
-Enveloping
-Enclosing
-Rotation

Knowledge of schemas gives us a way of describing common behaviour patterns in seemingly unrelated activities. They help us to describe in more detail the way in which a child is approaching learning. This helps us to understand children's play better and to provide appropriately for each individual

HAVE YOU EVER FOUND YOURSELF ASKING 'WHY DON'T THEY EVER PLAY WITH THEIR OWN TOYS' DOES YOUR CHILD WANT TO ALWAYS TO EXPLORE REAL OBJECTS FROM AROUND THE HOME?

When children play with natural and authentic resources they get the feel, the taste, the texture, the smell, the weight.
When you give a child a closed resources, with a predetermined learning outcome the excitement is short.
When a child leads their own play, with no predetermined outcome the possibilities are endless! The children are instantly rewarded with a sense of satisfaction, a sense of self and confidence to be themselves.
Children connect their learning to personal experiences. If we focused on planning ahead, letters of the week, printed worksheets and predetermined craft activities the children would hold no personal relevance and become disinterested very quickly.
Have you noticed that the number of fingers a child usually holds up to represent a number first, is their age? Or the letter they usually form first is the first letter of their name, or M for 'Mummy' or D for 'Daddy'
When children begin early imaginative play, it is usually a representation of what they have seen in the home.
When children are able to thrive in their self-assurance and feel a real sense of belonging in their nursery environment, when they feel they have a voice and their opinions matter, when they are able to lead their own play and express their preferences fully. Then they begin to thrive. They learn the most important skill sets, at their own personal pace to prepare them for their academic learning later on!

What are loose parts?
Loose parts are materials that can be transported and played with in any way a child desires.
There is no specific direction for play, leaving the imagination of the child to guide their own play and their own thinking.

What learning opportunities do loose parts bring?
-They can be combined, redesigned, lined up, taken apart and put back together
-They enhance children's ability to think imaginatively
- They provide a sensory experience with natural and authentic resources.
-Children's experiences of the wider world are opened up
- Children become naturally curious
- Loose parts teach

Sleep time 🥱

At Care4kids, it is of most importance to us that children feel safe and secure when going to sleep. It is a restful ritual A mindful and peaceful time of the day to drift off to sleep in a calm atmosphere.

🌠What rituals are part of our sleep time?🌠

- Cot beds carefully placed with each childrens blankets and comforters (A sense of belonging)

-Following children's routines from home (Find ways of managing transitions)

- An adult there to help sooth, helping the child to eventually self sooth using a comforter (Find ways to calm themselves, through being calmed and comforted by their key person)

Why do we use sleep mats?

Sleep mats allow a restful sleep where children and babies can naturally unfold, stretch their legs and sleep without restrictions. Children have freedom to move, freedom to roll, freedom to fidget. These movements are an important part of babies self regulation and self soothing!

Sleeping on a mat does not isolate the child, they can sleep among their peers and build those close connections with them
It helps adults be present, connect and develop their personal, social and emotional development.

For more information - research Emmi Pikler, a pediatrician and infant educator who inspired the theory behind the natural unfolding of babies.

❤️Creating bonds
❤️Building healthy attachments

How important is this?
The key person role is much more than that of a named person who acts as a link between your setting and a child’s parents. We understand the significance and value that we have as a key person in a child’s life. The key person must help ensure that every child’s learning and care is tailored to meet their individual needs. The key person must seek to engage and support parents and/or carers in guiding their child’s development at home.

A child who attends Care4kids and Challock Preschool will be cared for in a warm, consistent and loving way. This honours each child’s need for a protective and loving relationship while they are away from their parents and carers.

Overarching principles of the EYFS
~Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and selfassured • children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
~Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
~Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
~Importance of learning and development. Children develop and learn at different rates. (See “the characteristics of effective teaching and learning” at paragraph 1.15). The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

The settling in process
The first few weeks in a new setting are hugely valuable, creating foundations for what children will go on to achieve. Some children will adjust easily into an unfamiliar environment. They quickly feel comfortable and secure and will be able to get the most from their experiences. Others will take longer and need more support. Children can be emotionally vulnerable in a new setting, and the settling in process should be a major priority, especially for the youngest children. Careful planning is needed to ensure all children feel welcome and secure. An enabling environment supports children to express their feelings and emotions in a positive way. Your aim is to make your setting somewhere that all children will reach their optimum level of personal, social and emotional development.

A calm and harmonious atmosphere is an important part of ensuring wellbeing.

Ways that your we create a calm and harmonious atmosphere
Play classical music softly in the background.
Use soothing music or sounds such as waves or rainwater.
Create small ‘quiet corners’ with cushions, beanbags and books or sensory resources.
Keep staff voices low, gentle and measured.
Respond calmly and with empathy to any behaviour challenges.
Discuss and explain your expectations to the children in a sensitive manner.
Encourage children and adults to be respectful, polite and kind.

When a child feels secure, they are much more able to freely engage with the activities and opportunities for play. They can also build their own peer network, feeling confident to engage with other children and share play.
