Expectant parents and families with young babies are invited to attend a series of free baby showers at family hubs across Tameside. The first event will take place at West Family Hub (Droylsden) on 9th September, with families welcome to drop in between 4.30pm and 7pm.

Bringing together a range of local services and support organisations, the baby shower will give parents the chance to access information, ask questions and learn about the help available during pregnancy and early parenthood. Visitors can meet midwives, health visitors, Dad Matters and Be Well representatives, while connecting with other local families.

Families can take part in interactive activities and baby care demonstrations designed to build knowledge, skills and confidence. Refreshments, giveaways and a prize draw will also be available, with one attendee winning a £50 Boots voucher. Further baby showers will be held at family hubs across the borough over the coming months.

The dates and locations of the Baby Showers are:

9th September 2026 - West Family Hub (Droylsden)
19th November 2026 - North Family Hub (Ashton)
21st January 2027 - East Family Hub (Stalybridge)
17th March 2027 - South Family Hub (Hyde)

Please spread the word far and wide and let any friends and family know that are expecting a baby. We look forward to seeing you there!

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: 8th June 2026 - 12th June 2026

Thank you for taking the time to reflect with us this week.

To end Infant Mental Health Awareness week, a mum we have worked with, Beth, has kindly shared her thoughts on attunement, and what it has been like to work with our Stockport team.

‘Attunement is a very important concept to me. Understanding what it means and how to achieve it made a huge difference when I faced challenges bonding and connecting with my daughter. From the moment she was born, things didn’t feel the same as they had with my first daughter. Medical professionals were quick to diagnose me with postnatal depression, but I always felt that what I was experiencing was different.

I struggled to read and understand my daughter and didn’t feel I knew how to soothe her, or myself when I became distressed. Through the Stockport Infant Parent Mental Health Service, I was introduced to the principles of attunement. This was a turning point. It helped me recognise practical things I could do to better attune to my daughter and, in turn, begin to build a stronger bond and connection.

For the first time, I felt a sense of control and hope in that there were things I could actively do to improve our relationship. Through a special video based therapy the service used with me, I was a me to see these elements of attunement in action and the difference they made. I’ve since been able to apply these principles to other relationships in my life as well.

I will always be deeply grateful to the service for teaching me about attunement. Thank you!’

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: 8th June 2026 - 12th June 2026

E is for ENOUGH

You don’t have to be attuned all the time.

Attunement isn’t about getting it right every time. It’s about repairing when things go wrong. Being attuned doesn’t mean never missing the moment. It means going back and reconnecting.

Repair can look like:
• apologising
• having another go
• offering comfort after a difficult moment

A – Attention: noticing your child
T – Tuning in: wondering about feelings beneath behaviour
T – Time: slowing down
U – Understanding: helping children make sense of feelings
N – Needs: responding to what’s needed in the moment
E – Enough: remembering that repair matters more than perfection

Attunement isn’t about always knowing what to do. It’s about being curious, responsive, and willing to reconnect. Even small moments - a pause, a kind word, a cuddle, or going back after a hard moment - can help children feel safe and understood.

You don’t have to do it perfectly. Being good enough is enough!

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: 8th June 2026 - 12th June 2026

U is for UNDERSTANDING and N is for NEEDS

UNDERSTANDING:

You don’t have to fix feelings - just help your baby or child feel understood. Understanding means helping children make sense of their feelings and experiences, especially those that feel confusing or overwhelming.

Understanding doesn’t make feelings disappear, it helps children feel less alone with them.

You might try saying:
• “That was really loud, I wonder if it scared you.”
• “Maybe you feel sad because you didn’t want me to go.”
• “It can be hard or frustrating when things change.”

Naming feelings helps calm the nervous system and supports emotional safety.

NEEDS:

Needs can change from moment to moment. Attunement is about being flexible and noticing what your child needs right now. Needs aren’t demands, they are signals.

Sometimes a baby or child needs:
• Comfort
• Space
• Play
• Rest

Meeting emotional needs can help them to feel secure and supported as they grow.
